Do You Scrub Before You Shave?

Post by Mr Mxyztplk »

I was wondering how many of you use a facial scrub as part of your pre-shave prep. I have done this a few times, but always seem to get a bad shave; I guess my face is too sensitive for that much exfoliation. So, since I only shave every other day, I use my facial scrub on my non-shave days. What say you, gents?

I never use a scrub before shaving for same reason, face feels too raw after the scrub. I usually shave in morning, so sometimes will use a scrub at night if I do use one. Face seems to have enough time to recover then.

I have never and will never buy a 'facial scrub'. This is what I used to exfoliate this morning:

I use a face wash with glycolic acid in it. That's enough pre-shave exfoliation for me.

I never use a facial scrub, but I do wash my beard with Musgo Real Glycemic Lime Oil soap and rinse it before working up a lather with a regular shaving soap or cream and applying that.

Nope. Never. My morning shave is all the exfoliation that I need.

Chris - that's a beautiful razor!

. . . No, like others have mentioned, I consider shaving as my exfoliation. I actually don't even wash my face before shaving. . . I just scrub it with the hot shower water - I get better results this way.

That's a good looking razor. I use Baxter's scrub 1-2 times per week before I go to bed. I usually go light on the beard area as it tend to do more damage than it helps.

I think scrubs were specifically designed to separate people from their hard earned money along with pre-shave oil and other potions and lotions targeted at metrosexuals.

shower with soap
lather
shave
aftershave
off to the steel mill.

I'm in the non-scrub camp as well Rick, I'm curious though, what benefit do you get from using it?

I don't consider myself a metrosexual by any means. My fiancee got me started using it. She has very clear skin, so I gave it a go. Since then I have noticed my face, especially my forehead, becoming noticeably more clear. I think that unless you have tried it, you shouldn't knock it.

I feel like it is very beneficial for myself. Did that post come off as very defensive? I just don't want people to assume that because you use a facial scrub you are metrosexual as assumed by Rusty.

Tad I don't assume anything, just wondered what the product is used for.

I'm a scrubber...

Like I've mentioned before, I have oily skin that is prone to zits and blackheads. And since I, for one, fail to shave my nose and forehead, I use a scrub. :D

+1 on the oily skin and blackheads. Both can be very hard to take care of.

A scrub is good for exfoliating the dead skin cells away, and, as it has already been said, is good for people with acne prone skin. One thing I failed to mention is that it is imperative to use a very gentle scrub, since the goal is proper exfoliation, not sandblasting. I use Desert Essence facial scrub that contains jojoba oil and almond meal, and just like shaving, I use very light pressure and let the scrub particles do their job.

The parts of my face that I don't shave? Those I will scrub, perhaps twice per week. The parts that I do shave? No, completely unnecessary.
