Brushless and Oil advocate
I've always been the guy thats really enjoyed the pleasures of that Rose soap ,that citrus shaving cream ,and to be fair any other fragrance from Minty to Bay Rum.Always loved the idea and the act of making a lather with a brush the true down to earth pleasure of a man in his element making stuff from other stuff .
But then change .........I tried brushless cream ,the very same cream I bought years ago and immediately threw into the ''out of sight'' pile once I discovered I coudn't lather it .
The very idea of brushless conjures up images of gillette type goop in a can full of chemicals and crap and to top it all it just isnt traditional is it ?.
So the face was there all waiting freshly covered in an over generous amount of Aubrey Organics Mens Stock in Pine { smells nothing like pine ,rather more like a }sports rub}
And against all my pre-decided conclusions I had one of the best shaves I've ever had ,zero irritation ,skin feels smooth and soft.
4 weeks on and I've tried most of them out there and even moved on to shaving oils ,which I must admit are harder to master and are picky as to which face they like ,but when you get it right the shave is a truely pleasureable experience.
my findings thus far
Brushless
Aubrey Organics ..amazing .no paraben
Real Shaving Company cream and gels ..Amazing .no paraben
Natural Grooming Company cream and gels..Amazing .no paraben
King of Shaves { KoS}gels { all of them } ..very good
KoS Serums ..Very good
Hackett ..Amazing
Oils
Kos { all of them Alpha nad Kinexium } ..Very good ,though dont seem to agree with me and tend to leave me sore
Real Shaving Company ..didnt work for me at all
Natural Grooming Company ..as above
One Planet ..Totally Amazing
NUAGE { menthol and Silicone}..Amazing
Homemade with all the expensive oils such as JOJOBA ,Coconut,grape seed ..REALLY didnt work for me
Olive oil ..worked nicely thank you though left me a little sore
Shave Secret ..no idea as they wont answer their bloody emails asking about shipment to the UK !!
Apart from the shaves with the oils that didnt like me my shaves in the last 4 weeks have been my all time best and I doubt very much that I will be buying anything other than brushless and oils for a long time ...............or untill of course I decide to try something else that is
At the very least I would strongly recommend giving the above a try and maybe, just maybe you too will discover that you have been missing out on some lovely products

There will always be more stuff
Must say I'm particularly drawn to oils at the moment ,mainly because there a little harder to master { for me }
I love the simplistic nature of oil and the benefits for my skin ,plus they are natural ,unless of course you go for the silicone varieties.
Really loving Somerset and One Planet { One Planet is less than £2 at Asda !!}

The Aubrey is my "go-to" when I absolutely positively have to get out the door in a hurry. It's slick enough for a layer to last me a couple of passes and I get a really smooth shave out of it. I'm less enthralled with how it gunks up the blade, but that rinses off. Still enables me to get a proper shave with a minimum of time spent. I still like the rest of the ritual, but there are days... and the Aubrey is a better alternative for me than canned goo and a multiblade.
EDIT: It's Avalon, not Aubrey, that I use. Never tried Aubrey.

I love Cloves and yes I love Menthol ...............And after Shave Secret finally decided to respond I've got 2 bottles of the stuff wanging it's way over the pond to my humble green door .paperpundit wrote:Richy, do you like menthol and cloves?
Then you'd like Shave Secret.
PLUS !!! I've just recieved a bottle of Total Shave Solution which ,now that you mention it smells heavily of Cloves and Menthol ...............Hope it's not the same stuff re-branded ,hey ho it will get used .
Further to my original post I've really been bitten by the oil bug ,I've twigged how to use it on my face and I'm experiencing some divine shaves AND { he exclaims in childish excitement } I can finally use and enjoy Feather blades which have always but always been my dont go to blade .
The Futur set on 1.5 simply glides along my chops ,and as for irritation ...................well, whats that ? remind again me please .
There will always be more stuff

You know, I can see some brushless creams being good, and I have in a pinch used Coates brushless - just rubbed it into the face with the fingers and to be honest it was slicker but I dont think it cut as well. No irritation though.
Shave oils are another story for me. I have tried 3, 4 or 5 of them, early on when this board was new, but that was say about a year after I ventured into the Vision razor, feather blades and Trumper creams. So I was ahead of the learning curve before I gave oils a good run is what I am trying to say. For some reason, the premise of using the oil first and then lathering over it sounds good, but in practice, it did not give a better shave and many times, it shaved worse than just the cream alone. The razor tended to collect the cream/stubble/oil combo rather than somehow push it up onto the blade body or around the face. I have found that using the QED shave stick with glycerine under a cream makes for a slicker face for the blade than any shave oil I have used with cream. Now, I am all for trying things out, and if I get a sample will keep an open mind, but I am not up for paying for a bottle of shave oil only to repeat my prior experiences with that medium

sam,,, i pretty much have had the same experiences with brushless and oils as you have.
way before i found smf i found a oil for shaving on a website that i dont remember its name.
they said only use two or three drops haha i couldnt get two or three drops to spread over my entire face.
five or 6 drops would. i didnt find any benefit and passed it along to somebody. when the oil threads came to smf i tried aos oil i found at a cvs drug store. same story
using a brush is enjoyable and its quite effective and i have not found a better way

Now you see Sam, I guess different skins have different outcomes...
I have tried spreading glycerin alone on my face, then lathering over it, and while it seemed fine during the shave, it irritated my skin. However, I still add a few drops of glycerin to under-whelming soaps and creams when I am trying to use them up...
Meanwhile, oils don't bother my skin at all. I'd never use one to shave by itself, if I didn't have to, but on those mornings where my skin seems a little underhydrated or not quite as supple, a few drops under a cream makes for a much smoother shave...
