Gave in: Shaved goatee, letting grey come out
50 years old and I am now without a goatee. Have had at least a moustache forever it seems, and since my daughter was 3 or so, at least a goatee or beard, maybe 6 months with just a moustache but that was years ago. She is now 23 1/2. Just got tired of using a Norelco trimmer to keep it trimmed and then Just for Men beard coloring to dye it to dark brown, leaving it on a little longer to make it darker After four days, the goatee needed trimming and if I did that, then the grey roots would show. Some hairs would just not take the color. Also dyed my hair though it had just grey on the sides and sideburns. Yet it seems that there would be white hairs on the back of my neck and under the bottom of the neckline of hair. Wife and daughter insisted I do this for at least 7 years now. I came home and said I was not dying the hair or beard anymore.
Moustache is flecked black and white, and the goatee was basically all white near the chin and heading all white the closer it got to the mouth. Think 70% white overall under the lips. Asked wife what she preferred, white goatee or no goatee. She said she hated me either way so I shaved the goatee. Really wanna see what I look like without the moustache.
Wow, shaving the chin was hard today. Had to slow down and irritation, a bit. My cheeks and neck must be like leather compartively. I may grow the goatee back if they can hang with a white one, but I hated once a week to dye the goatee. Really needed it Sunday and Wednesday or every four days to trim and then dye.

I shaved mine after twenty-eight years. It had turned all white and I thought "Why not?". That was what I said back then when I grew it and it stuck around for a while. I like the clean shaven look and the slightly younger appearance, but there is the matter of the evolving double chin that the goatee was making less visible. I have to think about this.

Seriously though, making a man dye his hair to hide grey/white is akin to making him wear a bad rug in my mind... I am almost completely bald on top, and since I have started growing my winter coat (stopped shaving my head) I have noticed more grey/white on the sides. I also have many white hairs in my goatee and side burns. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with a man going grey/white with dignity and allowing it to happen.
Please note that I do not fault men for dyeing or wearing a toupée if THEY choose to, I personally don't think it is needed though. That being said, if modern medicine finds a cure for male pattern baldness (not plugs) count me in!!!!!!

Sam, the fact that your wife doesn't like the goatee in any form is an important consideration in whether to keep it, or not.
Personally, I think some facial hair looks good, and most before and after photos I see on this forum look better to me before the beards or mustaches were shaved off.
I've worn a beard since 1972 and I really can't see myself without it. I shaved it off once on a dare, but grew it back soon thereafter. I'll turn 59 next month and my beard is almost completely gray, though I have no noticeable gray on top. As the gray works its way north, I'll just leave it. This works for me.

Guys,
At the risk of being a bit controversial, I'm perplexed. Why the proliferation of beards by members of a shaving forum?
At about the same time that I began to use a DE, I started to shave my head, and have come to look forward to the extended pleasure of a daily full face and head shave. For me, shaving only the cheeks and throat, no matter how artfully performed, would hardly satisfy.
I find that an additional benefit of a full shave is that gray hairs are no longer an issue.
With utmost regard,

gagarin, I started shaving my head except in the winter shortly after starting DE shaving as well, and feel about the same about looking forward to the (near) complete head/face shave..... but I do have a stash and goat. I am overweight and the goatee not only hides the chinchin (ha ha ha...double chin) it helps make my face look longer/ head look less round and thus gives a small slimming effect. Additionally, I am 30 and look 30 with the goat, but only look about 25 clean shaven.....I enjoy looking my age and am not ready to try and hide it......yet

Chuck, of course there are others here who see it as you do, and I get what you're saying.
On the other hand, if I shave but don't shave off all of my whiskers ...
Am I not a "shaver?"
Am I not entitled to enjoy my shave?
Do I not merit membership on such a forum?
I don't think most would actually say "no" to any of these questions, even though they might have some misgivings.
I do 3 1/2 passes on my neck, I employ skill to do it well, and I take my time to really enjoy the process.

Sam - I'm a younger fellow (32), so take this with a grain of salt, but I recommend NOT dying your facial hair anymore. It's obviously a pain in the a!! for you, and it's probably obvious to others that you take the time to dye it, which is worse than a salt and pepper deal, IMO. Let it go natural - embrace it, or just shave your whole face.

Sam, I was shocked a while back when I hadn't shaved for a few days and noticed my beard had a lot of white in it. The last time I had let it grow a few days it was still fairly dark, so you can imagine the shock. I'm used to it though and figure there's not much I can do but accept it. I definitely wouldn't dye any hair on my body though.

I'm only (very nearly) 40 and have been bald for over 20 years and going grey for the last 10!
Don't fight those outward tell-tale signs of age. Look at all the stress our women folk put themselves under doing just that.
Be young, heathy and strong in mind, body and spirit and ignore anyone else's opinion on the matter. It's nature's way of letting other members of our tribe know who the wise folk are so that the youngsters can follow their lead. I don't think it's our place to tinker with 100,000 years of evolution.
I have the most fantastic handlebar tache as well as friendly mutton chops that you could hunt a bear in.
It would never cross my mind to cover up the white.

If the original purpose of the goatee is to hide a double chin, and then the whiskers turn gray while the hair on ones head is still fairly natural in color... well, these are the questions that one must ponder.
I shaved the goatee. That was over ten years ago. Now I've started doing something about the double chin.
That's life.

Sam you did the right thing by shaving it away IMO. I have also read you are balding same as me on top. To me the right decision is to cut them the hair short, or like in my case I trim it short with an electronic clipper.
Also I would not dye a graying hair or beard, but let it go natural. It also gives oneself some feel of releave. But everyone is different.
As a side note I have fun many times looking at some guys with really hilarious beards and moustaches
I don't particularly care if i don't get totally BBS on my chin.

Chris, you asked, lol
Me, with goatee and dyed at that
Now goatee with white showing through, but it is even more white now at the bottom of the goatee:
Now me with just a moustache, I feel naked:
Daughter says shave moustache. Wife says grow goatee and dye it back. I want to shave it all off, or keep goatee but let it go white.
