Market shift

Post by brothers »

For discussion purposes, just off the top of my head, YMMV, it's occurred to me that only a couple of years ago only a handful of us, or nobody, had heard of this stuff:

Newcomers:

Vitos
Irisch Moos
RazoRock/Italian Barber
Dr. Selby
I Coloniali
Coate's soap
Martin de Candre
New Forest Brushes
DR Harris Rose cream

What else can you think of that should be on this list?
___________________________________________

Also, only in the last couple of years we took this stuff for granted, and now it's all but gone forever:

Oldtimers:

Penhaligon's reputation for the best performing soaps on the market
Crabtree & Evelyn Sweet Almond Oil soap and cream
The Gentleman's Quarter
Prairie Creations
Roger & Gaulet shaving soap
Iridium Super blades
Floris's reputation for one of the top performing soaps on the market

What else can you think of that should be on this list?

Other than Vitos...
Cella
Valobra
P160 (RIP)...
A whole new genre of soaps that are, you could argue, as good as anything on the market, and come in massive, economical kilo blocks.

Then, for me personally, the revelation of cheapo European supermarket sticks. Usually tallow based and made in Germany. These have been known about for a while but only got the credit they deserve more recently. Combine this with the decline of the English soaps and the notion of 'getting what you pay for', at least with soaps, is hard to argue for these days.

Razors
When I first browsed the forums (in 07, maybe), the only razors in production seemed to be Merkur, and they seemed to be better reviewed than they are now. Muhle/EJ got little mention. Vintage Gillette's seemed more desirable than they do now...perhaps this is a personal thing, or perhaps there are more quality new razors available.

Floyd the Barber. I'm sick of 'stylists' giving me their business cards with a name like Angel or Bambi.

The Barber's daughter, Akiko, cut's my hair and she's a babe! And, she does a darn good job cutting my hair too. Makes me wish my hair grew twice as fast as it does.

Newcomers:

Three (3) complete new lines from the mighty Proraso, including Sandalwood

New Blossomwood fragrance from Nancy Boy

Oddly, no mention of this on SMF, at least that I'm aware of. But, maybe I'm out of touch.

I have read where one of Proraso's new lines of shaving cream, etc. will be red. The other 2 will be blue and white. How interesting is this?

I didn't know Prairie Creations was gone, so I went to the web site. Yes, the store is closed. There's a link to Krissy's caringbridge.org page, but it hasn't been updated since mid-November...

Painting Simpson's "sterilised" labels with clear nail polish so they wouldn't come off. You young whippersnappers will never know the pleasure of wielding that nail polish brush and inhaling those heady fumes. But take care! Too much nail polish will cause the letters to run. Two light coats is better. Oh the memories!
