The Shave Of My Life... Still BBS After 19 Hours...!

Post by Englishman »

I'm not quite sure what happened today. I only own one razor and one brush.... and at the
moment only one blade and one shaving cream.... I'm not exactly afflicted with AD's.
I have good shaving kit, but very ordinary..... Razor is a Merkur 34c HD.... Brush is a
Dovo long handle.... Blade is a cheap Derby 3 shaves old and my cream is a local store
bought brand called Erasmic, again cheap but very very good. I've been DE shaving for
8 years, and been using a brush and cream for nearly 20.

So 5 O'Clock this morning I had my usual shave... 3 passes, one WTG, second one against
the grain very very gently and my 3rd normal against the grain to make it BBS, a tiny touch
up here and there and I'm done.... felty pretty good. I knew I'd done a pretty good job when
I ran the Alum block over my face and neck and only felt the mearest hint of it. Quick rinse,
on with the balm and job done. Lovely.

Well, it's now coming up to midnight, 19 hours later and running my hand against the
grain still BBS... If I push really hard and rub against the grain I can just start to feel the
stubble, so my guess would be a true BBS for 16 hours. Must be a record for me. I have
no idea why this happened, but I hadn't had a shave for 3 days before this morning and
I always seem to get a really good one after a couple of days rest,. However this is
definitely a new record for me, I think 12 hours is about normal for me.

Anyone else had this happen to them...? Definitely the shave of my life....

Rico, maybe your whiskers just slowed down! Seriously, yes, I've had it happen too, and it's always a nice feeling.

Awesome... I've been having amazing shaves lately. I find the key factor isn't what gear I use, but rather just how much time I take. If I'm patient, mindful, and careful, I'll get a really stellar shave.

Never had a shave last that long.

Actually, never wanted a shave to last that long.

But, to each his own...

Enjoy your shave...

I must admit, I'm not sure I want shaves to last that long either...

However, back to normal yesterday.... I loaded a new blade from my
pack of Derby's that I thought I'd try and after an amazing 4 shaves
from the first blade I was.... How should I say.... Unsurprised and a
little disappointed that the second blade was a little tuggy and pulley...

Still got a very good BBS shave, but one tiny weeper, and I haven't
had one of them in years, and the shave lasted 10 hours before I felt
stubble. Still a great blade for the money, and no irritation from it, but
perhaps not quite the bargain delight I hoped it might be.

Has anyone else experienced inconsistency with Derby blades from the
same pack...?

Yes, this past week actually. I have a Derby loaded in a Super Speed at home and in a Merkur Travel Razor for the business trip. The blades are from the same pack. I started with the Super Speed, then four days with the second Derby, then back home to the first one. The first Derby felt "scratchy" and I got a weeper both times I used it. The "road Derby" felt smother, even though it was in a more aggressive Merkur head. I am assuming the first Derby was a bad blade. I am a bit disappointed as my previous use of Derby's was fine (~2 years ago) and I want to go back to milder blades as I think I am developing thinning skin from the "sharp blades".

Well, maybe I got a bad Derby for my first one. I decided it wasn't worth it and they're now the wifes. I never tried blade #2.

But bad blade or no, if their QC is the pits, I want no part of them. I really don't care if the price is right or whatever. My skin and an enjoyable shave are worth far more to me than an inexpensive blade. Heck, it's just pennies per shave.

Agreed.
I tend not to think of the blade as much as the brush, lather, and scents as the enjoyments of shaving. If I am reminded of a rough shave by a sore face, the pleasurable shave experience is negated. To me, the blade is like the offensive line in football or support staff in a restaurant: as important as it is, it gets noticed only when the job turns out badly.

Yesterday was one of those dream shaves. This morning I skipped the shave due to the fact that yesterday's was so good. Now tomorrow will be a good shave because it seems every time I skip a day the next time I shave I get very good results.

You're not the only one.... I still don't know why I get a great shave if
I skip a day or two, but it always works out that way.

I have always found it difficult to appreciate a close shave without having a furry face at least one day
per week.
