What's in the box?

Post by brothers »

What's in the box? Starting about four months ago, and for the next several months, I'm working through about 17 soaps and creams. As time passes, as I use each one, some will be keepers, others will become spares and surplus, and some (MdC Fougere for example) will be completely used up. The ones that don't get used up and that I won't be using in the future will be placed into a box. The box is NOT for sale and I don't know if it ever will be, everything in the box will just have to wait until I've made it all the way to the last item, and at that time I'll figure out exactly what to do with it, and when. No rush. This will take time. The reason for this post is to document the changing list of what's in the box and my progress as it occurs. Since this began, I've already made it through 6 soaps and creams. I might even add other items such as brushes, razors, etc., if necessary. There's no guarantee I'll add anything to the box, I might even remove things if I change my mind, but the list is going to be slowly and surely refreshed and updated to show the current contents and current date.

Contents of the box as of April 20, 2015:
Wars shaving cream tube (1)
Irisch Moos shaving cream tube (2)
Nancy Boy Blossomwood shaving cream tub (1)
Two (2) Gillette Super Adjustable long handle razors.

Thanks for this post. I just bought a tube of Wars and haven't tried it. Curious what turned you off on it. I have a bunch of cologne/edts that I could gladly dump. They sounded interesting on paper but not so on my person.

Pete, I like the Wars, and am about halfway through my other tube with daily use. Problem is I just had so many. This one is just extra.

This has the potential to be a very interesting thread.

Gary, my problem is that I'm working through about 20 soaps and creams and I don't have a box. I don't have a single cream that I dislike. Some are better than others but there is only a marginal difference between any of them. All this stuff will probably outlive me but I enjoy each and every one. :D
Best regards,

Funny! I used to think this way also, then I started to really load my brush up (helps in hard water areas too) with a lot of soap. then I noticed I actually started to use up a puck of the soaps I use a lot. BTW I still have some of the original pucks I started with more than 8 years ago when I discovered traditional wet shaving

This is true, a brush can be loaded lightly or heavily and soaps tend to last a lot longer when used with a light hand.

It took some time to figure it out. Thanks to Brian and Bryan, their ultralather technique was the solution to my hard water issue. Several years ago I couldn't get a decent lather no matter how hard I tried. Using distilled water worked, but the process of being forced to use a special water just so I could shave seemed somewhat flaky or geeky. I began to use tap water as hot as possible, and load the dry brush on the soap (depending on which soap) for as long as it takes to properly load the brush and make the kind of lather I choose to make. Some soaps need as little as 15 to 20 seconds of loading. Others need upwards of 60 seconds or more. That's what determines how long any given soap will last me.

I have taken the razors out of the box. I want to keep them or sell them individually. Also, a thought just occurred to me --- maybe I should take the 7.5 shaving soaps listed above out of the box and keep them to use in the shower.
