Latherizer Recipes?

Post by Barry »

Guys,

There are a handful of you who use a latherizer. I ordered one and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

What types of mixtures have you put into it? What are the proportions of water/cream/cologne/cleaner, etc. that you use? Have you found any particular cream to be best? I think I read one of Joel's old posts where he mentions Lucky Tiger cream.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just the generic name for the "Latherking." It's a little machine you plug into the wall and fill with liquid lather or some concoctions of cream, cologne and water. Once it's ready to go you push a button and it produces warm lather. A lot of barbershops have them. I read on the web (I think it was in a barber's obituary of all places!) that some states enacted health code laws preventing barbers from using the same brush on customer after customer so the barbers had to purchase latherizers.

Sean & Barry, It's one of the most widely held erroneous beliefs, that US barbers are prohibited by law from using real straight razors or shaving brushes. And it's the barbers themselves that most zealously perpetuate this notion. In most areas, they can use either of these tools, but there are, of course, fairly strict regulations regarding proper procedures for sanitizing and maintaining brushes and razors. Most barbers would rather not bother, lather machines and disposible blades are ever so much more convienant for them. But rather then admit that that's the reason, most of them prefer to tell customers, ".....oh no...no can't use one of those...it's illegal.....". For the most part, it's not. Regards, Gordon

I plan on getting a straight razor shave at the Borgata Hotel/Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.
