GFT Soaps. Where did the love go?

Post by Laney1566 »

I have an older puck of Sandlewood and it works great. I just received all 6 of the other scents. This is obviously the new formulation. Haven't tried them yet. Am I gonna be disappointed?

They are still good, and very well regarded.

Rose particularly.

I still enjoy the Rose but since I discovered DR Harris Almond and Marlborough..... it doesn't get the extended daily, weekly, monthly love it once got...

As a relative newcomer, I can't speak about the old formulations, but I like the five or six GFT soaps I've tried. I agree with Vinny that Rose is outstanding, and I'll also make a pitch for Violets. The lather is top-notch, while the fragrance is something to write home about.

I just used the Eucris. I find myself wondering why it is that all good things must end. I know that Trumpers has a Barber shop in England. This makes me wonder if Management listens to the barber's input, because I would have to think that after they reviewed the new soaps, they would have to have told them that they pale in comparison. For the first time ever, the soap on my face dried out and faded away after lathering. I had to return to the bowl several times to get a 2 pass shave. I just spent $175 on 6 wooden bowls so that I could have all the products offered by GFT because I thought it was a great product well worth the price. I am not saying I had a bad shave, just that there was no longer anything special about it. Might as well have been Williams shave soap. With that at least I expect a thin lather.
I am literally heartbroken over this. For months I have been arguing in favor of GFT Soaps not knowing about the formula change. I have egg on my face and little lather to hide behind.

How recent is this change? I know they used to be tallow, but they have been palm oil for a few years and they still work very well. Has there been another change (I do believe the Eucris is a bit different to the others and I hope they aren't all like that now). My trick is a fairly wet brush and spend about half a minute swirling on the soap, then work the lather in the beard until it gets thick. They can be very nearly as good as any other soap this way.

I have been nursing my Sandlewood for about 4 years. I know it is the older formulation. I guess I will try it wetter and hope for better results. With the sandlewood it only took a few swirls and I could work up a great lather in your...err the Moss Scuttle. :D
I will keep at it. Maybe it is a Eucris thing. I will use each of the other 5 I have yet to try on consecutive days.
I'll be lathering with crossed fingers.

Try the others before you panic. I also notice enough of a difference between the Eucris lather and other Trumper soaps that I am disappointed. Like you, I find that it dries and breaks down too quickly. But I also recently bought a round of Sandalwood soap that works as usual. I don't know if it was older stock, but I'm angling for some Limes and Almond soap soon and am hoping for the best.

Please keep us posted. With the size of your investment, I hope the others work out for you.

I find GFT soaps to be OK. But for all the hype and the price tag, they leave me underwhelmed. The scents are great, by far the best characteristic of these soaps - I particularly like the Sandalwood. The performance is... meh. Not bad, but nothing of note either. There are other soaps that work much better for me in terms of lather, slickness, protection, post shave face feel, etc... YMMV and all that...

Doug, since you're angling for the Limes, let me comment on it. I acquired Limes and Violets a few months ago from the same vendor. While I love the scent of both, I notice a difference in the quality of their lathers. Limes behaves somewhat as you describe Eucris. It's on the thin side, whereas Violets, like Rose and Coconut, produces a thicker, slicker lather. I'm speaking of the hard soaps, of course. Haven't tried the Almond soap, only the cream.

There really is no difference between them aside from the Eucris soap. It's slightly different.

I also have all the Trumper soap scents and find the Eucris to be a different animal. The others have great scents and perform fairly decent but not on par with the Harris soaps in my opinion.

I thought the Rose was a great soap, in both old and new formulae. Then I grew weary of the Rose fragrance and sold both of them. Then along came the Eucris and at first I praised GFT for introducing a new soap, stupidly presuming it was going to be the same formula. I didn't care for the new, new formula.

Then I happened onto the Violet, and currently have both the new and the old tallow formulations. I am still interested enough in the GFT line to be open to trying out the Limes and Almond versions of the soap, if an opportunity presents itself.

All of this has been somewhat eclipsed by the excellence I have found at the heart of the DRH Almond soap in all of it's tallowy majesty. And by the magnificent but underappreciated TOBS Lavender Soap.

What Gary said. I'll add TOBS Sandalwood soap to the list of under-appreciateds.

I have many of the flavors of GFT soaps and they all seem to be very similar in performance. That said none of them are younger than approx 2 years.

What raises my suspicion in this thread is that Eucris cake. Why is it different? What's so special about it that they had to make it a different formulation? The only real difference among these soaps is the scent. Is the scent of Eucris a special concoction that is interferes with lather making so much so that Trumper's soap maker had to alter it's formula? Or is this a harbinger of things to come with all the soaps? My gut is telling me the latter has a good chance at being the outcome. Prudence dictates we wait and see.

Chris, after what's happened with Vinolia, "harbinger" is exactly the word I would use.
