Trumpers Violets Disappointment
Trumpers Violets Disappointment
Since buying a puck of Trumpers Violets shave soap a few months ago I have been quite let down by this soap. The scent is about the only thing it has going for it. The shave results are just barely above mediocre.
The lather is rather airy and never really firms up, despite repeated attempts. Last night was about the last straw. I put about a tablespoon or two on top of the soap and let it soak for a good ten minutes before lathering. It loaded up very well and made huge mounds of cloudy lather, but it was still airy. I face lathered and bowl lathered. I lathered like crazy and finally went ahead with the shave and it was no better than any of the other times.
After two passes of disappointment I finally washed all the fluffy lather down the drain and started over with DR Harris. For $18 each, one of the most expensive in my current rotation, I expect a lot more. It is certainly better than Williams or VDH, but I'm sad to say, not much.
Anyone else experience this?

I'd rate Trumper soaps above Harris and far above Williams. Use sufficient water and work the brush on the soap until the lather suddenly thickens (like beating egg whites). It isn't the world's best at that point, but it will certainly do.

I have Trumper's rose, limes, almond, and Eucris. They all work perfect, even the Eucris but favor the rose in performance. I had a puck of violet and it was horrible. I mean below Williams horrible and I like Williams. It was a bad puck pure and simple. Many comment on my lathering techniques but it was the puck. I really think there was a bad batch at 1 point. I have very nice and soft water so everything seems to work fine for me.

I'll second Chris' recommendation to load the brush more heavily although I would personally stick with the Harris. My puck of Rose- another lovely scent- resides in the drawer.
Best,

I'm not really sure I could load my brush any more heavily than I did last night. There was so much lather I could have shaved a pig. It just didn't give me a very satisfying and comfortable shave. The first few times I used it, while not the best, it seemed better. It seems to be going down hill, yet it still looks barely used.
I'll try making lather right on the soap again, as I have done that in the past. I'm just not too excited about wasting another shave on this overpriced soap.
For the record, most of the lathering products in my rotation are premium products and I have been making lather for many years, (doesn't mean I'm not doing something wrong, but this one just isn't working for me). Tonight I used Santa Maria Novella, which was a very nice shave and works better than the Trumpers even if I'm not trying.

Dennis,do you have its ingredients list?
I have tried Trumpers coconut and rose with excellent results, and I understand than the violet soap has the same formulation than those two,and different than the almond or the sandalwood ones, which have been reported to have a faint lather.Maybe somebody else could correct me if the Almond or Sandalwood dont have the same ingredient list, but thats what I remember.

Yes,the Violet, the Coconut and the Rose has almost (but the scent) the same ingredients.I know that the Limes and the Almond has different ingredients,or at least, they used to have it and didnt provided the stable lather than the other 3 did (thats what I have read a couple of times here and there...),so I was wondering if the Violet have always had the same formulation or if that formulation have changed too.Aztecface wrote:No, no, no... same ingredients.

Dennis, Beats me. I currently have the Trumper Limes, Sandalwood, Almond, and Violet soaps and they all lather and shave well, and about the same. I've always found the Harris's soaps to lather slightly easier but the end result is very similiar to the Trumpers. I use a rather dense, close lying sort of lather which is never remotely 'fluffy'. It's more the 'white face paint' sort of lather. Unless you do, indeed, have a bum cake, I don't know what the problem might be.

I have Trumper Sandalwood and Coconut Oil soaps. I find the coconut to produce the better lather but both work. These soaps are sensitive to which brush I use. The Omega 30005 boar and the Simpson Berkeley 46 Best do well, and I load the soap dryer than other soaps.

Violet is probably my favorite among the Trumper soaps. The lather is rather finicky, I have to admit; as with all of them, too much water is its downfall. I'd suggest to Dennis that after he mixes it up in the bowl, allow the lather to rest for a minute. It will give up some moisture during that time and turn into the "white face paint" that Gordon describes - a thin but dense coating that's very good for shaving.
