Today marks the final shave with the Homemade Lime soap from 11/11/13. It lasted through 53 shaves.

This morning, following the extinguishment of the Homemade Lime yesterday, I shifted to the Homemade Tobacco soap from March 2, 2014. I'll be using it for a week or so before moving to the next scheduled soap. (Note to myself: today's shave was #7 on this tub).

Gary, after 5+ years, are the scents of your soaps holding on?

A year ago the Tobacco scented tub shown above had a good but mild scent, and when I started up again on it this week, it has become completely neutral. Makes a great lather though. :D

Nice to see this. I have some tobacco scented stuff I made back in the 2014 timeframe, that was something like 60-40 KOH-NaOH. The scent is quite nice, and the lather is excellent. I only use it infrequently now, I've settled on Bic Sensitives and bar soap (although since this COVID-19 stuff has started, I've been cultivating my "scruffy look" ... controlled stubble).

The soon-to-be ex wife and I are spending time cleaning out various parts of the house where "stuff" has been squirreled away ... I came across the soapmaking supplies, and am figuring on getting rid of it (not really that much to be had ... some old leftover KOH, stearic acid, and (in the fridge) coconut oil).

Dave, same here. I got tired of looking at my box and got rid of all that stuff a while back.

Tim, great to see you here!

I have been using one of your prototypes regularly, for some time, and I still have some soap from your commercial venture.

You definitely made some excellent soap.

My son was on a visit to us when we all agreed that he would be safer staying here for now rather than going back to Toronto. He ran out of soap - well, turned out I could help with that! Made him a half dozen bars of my olive oil hand/bath soap, which is good for frequent washing as it isn't too drying.
For 500g soap with 5% superfat, you use:
190ml water
68g NaOH
390ml olive oil
90ml 76º coconut oil
20ml castor oil
15ml of fragrance, or if unscented, use extra olive oil.

Olive oil is reluctant to trace, so don't be surprised if you have to get your stick blender red hot! Talking of heat, I find it traces quicker if not overheated, so stay around 90ºC for the cook. Takes about four hours to get pH down to 8. Set in a mold and OK to use the next day. I have added a drop of food colouring to it as it isn't a pretty soap (khaki coloured when au naturel), but even then it changes colour as it ages. In the past, I made it go green, but it changed to blue as it sat in sunlight! I left Thomas's the natural khaki colour. Perhaps the cold-process makers have the advantage here, as they seem to come out with pure white castile soaps from 100% olive oil.

And today I have a request for as much of it as I can make. Apparently half is to go to Germany. I'd better start charging for it.
