shave powder

Would some one tell me about shave powder. How is it used and how is the resulting shave?

The only 'shaving powder' I know is the Magic brand, marketed principally to African Americans as a way of avoiding ingrowing hairs. You mix it with water to make a caustic paste and paint it on. Hair dissolves and the mess is washed off. I'm told it doesn't do a very good job, and as you might imagine, some people will not be able to tolerate the chemical irritation on their skin.
I think there are also pre-shave powders to be put on the face before using an electric shaver. They just use talc particles as a dry lubricant.

FWIW, there was such a thing as Colgate "Rapid-Shave Powder", that was supposed to lather up for wet shaving.

Completely different sort of product as the "Magic" variety, which is more of a depilatory.
