Bay Rum? Will I smell like too much Capt' Morgan last night?
Bay Rum? Will I smell like too much Capt' Morgan last night?
I assume no, since it seems a very popular and traditional scent. Seriously though, I have been wondering - what does bay rum smell like? Is it a fairly standard blend, or does it vary greatly depending on brand? Does it actually smell like rum to any degree?
Alrighty, stickim up and hand over the Coates real nice and slow like....
Not really, and in case you were wondering, putting a splash of rum behind your ears is a complete waste of a valuable resource.

My wife detected a smell of cloves, but supposedly it's just Noble Bay Laurel leaves. I use Dominica Bay Rum, and it smells great---I think of it as what Old Spice was aspiring to be, but that's just me. The smell fades fairly quickly---or else I get used to it fairly quickly. I would recommend you give it a go.

I have tried various bay rum AS/EDTs, and the most pleasing to me is the Bay Rum from saintcharlesshaving.com. This has been accurately described as "bay rum on steroids". A very powerful scent that is very pleasing. A little goes a long way with this. Sue has really nailed it on this one, guys. A very long dry-down and no irritation (for me). Her typical container of this would last most gents a couple of years. Try it, you'll like it.

Bay rum is a scent all it's own. I like the Dominica brand for it's great treatment of my skin. I like the St John's Bay rum for it's staying power on me. These two smell different as well so yes it is different amongst different manufacturers. I don't think you can go wrong buying a bottle. I slightly prefer the scent of the St. John's bay rum so if it's refinement of scent with added staying power you like try that (although it's way more expensive). The Dominica bay rum is a lot cheaper and it's a classic but doesn't have the staying power. Just my 2¢.

Re: Bay Rum? Will I smell like too much Capt' Morgan last ni
About 3 weeks ago I came home from work, showered, and put on a conservative amount of a really nice bay rum. I went to a bar that I usually go to to grab a bite to eat and a beer or two. I walked in and sat down and started drinking my beer. The bartender started looking around and said "OK WHO THE HELL IS SMOKING CLOVE CIGARETTES IN MY BAR?!"
Haven't worn it since!

El Alamein, it must be nice. I really like the smell of St. John's, but on me, the scnt might last all of five minutes. It's a pity. For me, Dominica last longer...all of fifteen minutes. I like bay rum but none I've found that I like lasts more than about an hour at most for me. The Pinaud probably lasts the longest but it smells to Christmasy for me.

I hadn't thought that before, but, yes it does smell like Angostura Bitters. Now I must go have a Manhattan.mparker762 wrote:Ever smelled Pichaud's or Angostura Bitters? Smells like that. Don't put bay rum in your gin, though.

Has anyone tried making their own bay rum? I think I am going to try it, i've seen some recipes on the internet and am going to concoct my own recipe, most of them include things like: witch hazel, rum, bay leaves, allspice, cinnamon, orange, rosemary and clover. I'm hesitant to splash it on my face though, I think it would be better with a little dab behind the ears and on the neck.
