Post by Esoteric83 »

Quick question, and I'm sorry if it comes off as silly 8) - If someone asks "Good sir, what is that scent?", what do I reply with?

Forty Seven, eleven
Four, Seven, one, one
Four thousand seven hundred and eleven

Or do I attempt the German name on the bottle?

Thanks!

I use the first one, or will, if anyone ever asks me, and they won't. But then again, my bottle is actually "4711 ICE".

Squire, you made my nose hurt! I read your comment just as I was taking a drink of my morning OJ and laughed so hard it shot up through my nose. I have just one further comment about your words:

Priceless!

4711 was kept in production during WW2 and issued to Unterseeboot crews to counter the stench. I met a U boat veteran many years past. He hesitated to admit his service, 3 generation naval family carried more at 18 (BTDT) than political maturity. He said the combination of B.O. fuel, stale water and mold was only worsened! most crewmen saved the precious bottles for wives and sweethearts.

I've heard similar stuff from old retired submariners and apparently the only thing you could do is develop a high tolerance level.
