Ever Ready to refurb

Post by Shave4Fun »

I got this Ever Ready 500 off ebay two or three years ago and have been trying to decide what kind of hair to use. The old knot is quite stiff and has a golden brown color with some darker brown, sort of a two band. A lot has worn away, so it's hard to tell what it should look like. Does anyone know how to tell if this might have been horse hair? If it is boar, it's the stiffest boar knot I have ever felt.

It will take a 22mm knot without enlarging the hole and will probably get some type of badger replacement.

I will post other pics as changes are made.

It's a nice handle. I'd use whatever hair you want, actually. I can see the desire to make it historically accurate, but I think you might enjoy it more if you just pick the knot that appeals to you most.

That handle is a sure-fire winner. Glad to hear you're probably going with badger; for me the question would be, fan or bulb shape? (I know how I would go.)

I have experience with only one horse bristle brush, a Zurito. It's definitely not "quite stiff," and not even in the ballpark with boar bristles.

Enjoy the project, and please, more pics.

Either of the three, horse, boar or badger would be historically correct so I would choose the knot I wanted.

STAGE 1: Got most of the old bristles out. Just need to clean a little on the edge, drill a couple holes in bottom to help with epoxy, then touch up the black.

I'll load a pic when it's ready for the knot.

The knot will be made known once I decide and get it glued in.

Best,

Roger

Looking at this finest badger fan knot with extra hair for the handle.
What do you guys think?
Needs to be 22mm base.

If that's a TGN finest fan, you absolutely won't go wrong. It's a REALLY nice knot. Soft at the tips, has backbone, and acts like a much larger brush w/o being large.

Assuming it is, I set mine to 44mm and it's a favorite of mine.

Here it is compared to a Rooney 3/1.

Brian,

I failed to note it as such, but it is the TGN finest badger fan.

Thanks,

Roger
