Wiborg shaving brushes

Post by Janus »

These are new to me. I wonder who makes them. The propietor is Florian Arnold, Bei den Woerden 18b, 13437 Berlin, Germany.

I've never seen them before, but some of those handles look pretty scary.

Buzz, that's what catches my eye also. I like the look of those brushes.

They look like great brushes, but the knots are just way too big for me. I think they are typically in the 28-32 mm range.

What beautiful brushes. I am going to have to get some lotto tickets every week so I can afford to collect a few.

Attractive and interesting. If I live long enough to wear out my BK4 I might consider one, if they're still in business.

Janus, Wow!..."Manchurian badger" and free shipping world wide to boot. Pretty impressive. I wonder why these folks have never been mentioned before?..are they very new do you suppose? They certainly seem to have the English language shave forum lingo down ( chuckle ). Did you notice that the squat handled models seem to have the classic continental bulb shaped crowns but the longer handled ones are shown with the more English fan style knot? Very interesting.

Gordon, I have no idea who they are, how long they've been around or who actually makes these brushes, nor am I contemplating buying one (God knows I have too many as it is). I stumbled upon the site by accident yesterday but later made a google search and found that people on other forums had already ordered some. Maybe we'll see reviews before too long.

Don't know about the hair, but the handles' fat ring does not appeal.

I own two Wiborg brushes: a 2 band "Chubby" with a massive 29mm knot in a faux horn handle and a "Manchurian" with a 25/50 knot in a faux nacre handle.

The "Manchurian" is very much like really nice Somerset best hair. It has more backbone than typical Simpson best and is very consistent: few random darker hairs and little scritch.

The 2 band is pretty much exactly like current Simpson 2 band. Very nice and very solid build.

There is no glue bump to speak of in either brush.

Florian buys the knots and turns the handles himself on a manual lathe.

Hope this helps!

Interesting discussion on his site over the differences between fan and bulb shape brushes.

I just noticed in the photos of the bottom label that they are made in Germany.

It's obvious that he builds his brushes with quality materials and that he is a skilled craftsman. I wish him all success.

His prices are a bit high though across the board on the other products and I expect that's reflected in the brushes as well.

Rex, Yes, very helpful. So, he hand turns the handles but buys the knots ready made?....probably direct from some source in China although perhaps not. They certainly sound like quality pieces and if more loose cash was available one of those 'Manchurian' models would be tempting. Thanks to both Janus and yourself for bringing these to our attention. I can't help but think it's just a hoot the degree to which this chap ( and clearly English is not his first language ) has picked up the shave forum lingo even including a term or two I coined myself; like a brush having 'backbone'.
