MAC Brush Cleaner

Post by JRTASTER »

Lazy SOB that I am, looking for a fast, safe and efficient product to clean
several boar and badger shave brushes.
Have order the packets of brush cleaner sold by Classic Shaving but am also
wondering about MAC brush cleaner, available on Amazon. Appears to be for
barbers and beauticians needing to clean the tools of their trade.
Does anyone know if it's safe for use with my boar and treasured
badger shave brushes?
It's not real cheap, nor very expensive either and the directions seem straight-
forward.. So, has anyone here used the product and can offer an opinion on
its usefulness?
Many thanks!

I have used it every 4-6 months for the last couple years on my badger brushes, including vintage Simpson Manchurians and Rooney Finests, without any problems at all. It does a good job removing the use residue.

=D> Thanks Squire --- I no longer feel guilty that I have never cleaned my brushes with MAC, Borax, or anything other than a hot water rinse followed by a cold water rinse then a heavy flick in the shower stall to rid it off excess water.

I see no reason to use a cleaner on my brushes. I am primarily a shaving soap user and therefore am most eligible for such cleaning products, I figure. I find that one shave with cream pretty much removes most of the residue of the soap left behind over the years and makes the bristles softer for a time. I see no need for anything else.

I've seen more than a few dirty brushes, all of them haven't been used in decades. Sitting and gathering dust, most likely.

I've found water removes soap residue.

my three Rooneys have been in use for years now and I have never seen a reason to use any brush cleaning product on them.
I found my shaving soaps clean the brush and a generous warm and cold water since is all they need.

slap me if I'm wrong.

I use MAC brush cleaner only on brushes I 'be purchased before the first use. My other brushes just receive a thorough rinsing after each use and this seems yo do the trick obviating the need to use any cleaning products.

I have found it "Mac" to be the best of the best, kind and gentle with no residue at all, no matter how well you think you have cleaned your brush............ try a simple test, after 4 to 6 months of use with either Badger / Boar.

Lay a piece of black cloth down, pick up the brush run your hand / fingers across the brush over the cloth and watch the (dust) dry shaving soap. You will be amazed what comes out.

I use Ship-Shape every dozen shaves on all my brushes. This is solely to remove unseen residue,I use Mar-V-Cide right after the Ship-Shape bath to disinfect, which Ship-Shape does not do.

I have used CLR to quickly clean my best badger brushes. No I don't soak them in it. Just dip, squeeze and keep the tips down for a couple of minutes and rinse. All soap scum is gone and the bristles fluf up nicely. Not saying it is safe, but I am a gambler and the stuff works wonders on scum and lime elsewhere so why not.
