So I'm still on the hunt for my first shaving brush and a thought occurred in my mind should the shape of the handle be of cocern for a beginner. What are your thoughts?

Well, yes.

If you use a bowl to lather with you want a longer handle :-) or I would. I face lather and I like a shorter handle. I also need a sort of Mae West shape to allow me to hold onto it. It doesn't make a huge difference where the "waist" is, but it must allow my fingers a hold.

I agree. In addition, the handle should be in proportion to the size of the knot if for aesthetic reasons alone. The only handle size and shape I've come across that I don't like for both ergonomic reasons and aesthetic reasons is the Chubby-style handle.

I f you find a brush with good bristles at a very reasonable price I would go for it regardless of the handle shape. The only problem I have had with handles is on a Semoque boar bristle brush with a handle that has a hexangular outside at the top. When I try to pound the bristles on my left hand to knock out as much water as possible, I occasionally hit an edge of the handle against the base of my thumb. That hurts.

This is a very difficult question to answer correctly, because we all have our own personal preferences. To be honest, I never thought of asking other guys what handle shape I should buy. I'd say just get what you want based on the aesthetics of the handle and the size and shape of the knot. Please don't ask me what I prefer because I can probably guarantee if you ask an infinite number of people, you'll get an infinite number of responses, all different. There's only one person (you) who can decide, and even your own opinion will change. I think it's a mistake and a guarantee of disappointment to go by what others tell you. Another word of warning --- there are a large number of us who are arrogant enough to think our opinion is simply the only one that everyone else should obey, and assuredly those guys will rush to dictate what you should want and like because they want it and like it. :D Good luck!

I prefer these handles. All are home made.
