Which is the best double edge blade in your opinion?

Post by jbc »

This is all of the blades available world wide some of the blades you may not have heard of or ever used before. In my humble opinion the most popular tends to be the best quality blade.

Tye you know something I don’t. I did not know all of the different types that Gillette makes. I knew they made carbon steel, platinum, red, blue and thin. What are the Viking blades like?

Like Tye, I voted for Gillette, but I think we need to be crystal clear, that what we mean by that are the so-called 'Swedish Gillettes'; the ones sold in the UK, Scandinavia, and sometimes in Greece. We do NOT mean any of the other myriad Gillette DE versions sold in various other places, including the US.

I would probably vote for Wilkinson but I don't see it on the list... :P The closest I see to them are Wilkerson?

I am referring to the English made ones, as I have yet to try the German ones and probably won't for a while. (Curiosity will most likely win out and I will try them eventually)

I also really like the Israeli Crystals, but it depends on the razor which of these two are in 1st or 2nd place IMO.

This is subject to change as I try other brands of course. I have only tried 7 and have 2 more in my possession to try. Later, I will acquire more brands to try.

Why does there have to be a 'BEST' poll. The 'BEST' one is the one that works best for you. If the majority vote for one blade that doesn't work for you what does that mean? Why not just say 'which blade do like the most?'

I vote for no more 'best' polls.

Are all the blades in the poll currently available? Why not post some information on them? For instance, I've never heard of "Dinosaur", and I think it's likely that many others haven't, either.

Also, some brands are made in more than one location, and there can be a big difference between them. For instance, German vs. English Wilkinsons, Russian vs. "Swedish" (or "Viking") Gillettes.

Paul, Yes, the list is too vague on the one hand, and too bottom heavy on the other. I notice that ASR/Personna is listed, but, like Wilkinson and Gillette, they produce markedly different blades, under different names, including 'Crystal', that vary considerably.

Well it's a good start. I find the voting interesting just the same. I voted for Merkur but that's all I ever use. I don't really know if Feather or any other brand is better. Merkur works for me but maybe not for others. I agree also, that it depends on the razor. At least the survey is a rough guide to what everyone likes.

Exactly steve and in my humble opinion the most popular blade is usually the most popular for a reason, it tends to be the best blade. I will most likely order some feathers since they are not just the early leader they are far out front of the others. What is your best source for feathers? Mine thus far is cotton blossom crafts.

For me it's hard to say. I swear my skin gets used to a certain blade after a while and it just stops performing as well. I feel I need to rotate blades to get a better shave. If I'd have to rank them I would do as follows:

1) Wilkinson Swords (English made)
2) Derby
3) Dorco (though I still need more time with them to rate them accurately)
4) Swedes
5) Israelis
6) Feather
7) Merkur

So since you placed Wilkerson as your top blade, please vote for Wilkerson.

JBC,

I don't have a best sourde for Feathers because I have never bought any. The place you mentioned is one and ClassicShaving is another. I knowone of the SMF members also is a Feather blade source.
