A quick question from a newbie.
I was just wondering if the 1940's British Super-speeds are better built than their American counterparts and if one of them would make a good first razor. I have never used a safety razor before but have been "wet" shaving since I began to shave. I say "wet" because up to this point I have used the mass produced multi-blade razors and gels and have just recently found out about a better alternative. i can't wait to actually wet shave fro the first time. All rambling aside, i would appreciate any input that anyone can give me. Thank in advance.
The British ones tend to be a little heavier than the US ones. Either would be great to start on. The blade exposure is more important early on than the weight. The Super Speeds and the "Rocket" as the British version is called, both have similar blade exposure. If you are just experamenting then get the Super Speed as they tend to be cheaper than the Rockets. If you have one or the other then just make sure it is cleaned and disinfected and you should be good to go. Do you have good blades?

NiksaNovovic,
Welcome to SMF!!
May we address you by your first name?
Have you checked out Leisureguy's Blog found here...
http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2006/07 ... xperience/
Mantic has made several videos on Youtube, seen here...
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=mantic59
There are so many options and everyone has different preferences, so tell us more about your shaving background and what items you have read about or seen that you might be interesting in. We can try to help you find what you are looking for and learn more about it. How much are you looking at spending on each given category (brush,razor,cream/soap, etc.)?

Niksa would be just fine, and thank you for the welcome. I have used the Mach 3 and the new Mach 5 or six or whatever it's called with a pressurized shaving gel. i would really like a close shave, with as little irritation as possible because my face is prone to razor burn, and I hate ingrown hairs. I don't have that much monetary resources to throw at this new hobby, so getting the best whatever for the least amount of money would be great. I haven't really seen too much in the way of products but from browsing the forums I have seen that either the Merkur HD or the 40's SS are the ideal first razors for the majority of users. I do know that all of these preferences are highly personal but I'm simply looking for a place to start, something to give me a baseline reading to be able to compare to. I have been watching videos on Youtube by the user mantic59 and that is how I got introduced to the art of wet shaving.
Niksa,
Look into getting a Gillette Tech for a razor. They are generally inexpensive ~$10+. They disassemble into 3 pieces for easy cleaning and there are no moving parts to potentially break. Techs are known to be quite mild as far as shavers go and with the right technique and blade you can get a BBS though with a bit more effort than maybe other razors.
What stores are close by that might have brushes or cream/soap available? Walmart, Target, CVS, Nordstroms, Health food stores etc.?

I really don't mind doing that for everything except the brush because I would really like to feel it before buying. But if anyone can give me a good recommendation for anything I won't mind giving it a try. Getting a hold of these supplies isn't urgent, but I would like to assemble a kit and to actually try wet shaving as quickly as possible.
You can go ahead and order the blade sampler pack. You'll need that regardless of which razor you get. Check the Buying/Selling/Trading forum here on ShaveMyFace.com for other equipment.

Niksa,
Head to Crabtree & Evelyn and see what you find to your liking. They should have a nice variety of brushes, creams etc. If you have any questions about a specific item, ask the gentlemen on here prior to buying. That is a good place to start.
Michael has already mentioned the LetterK sample pack of DE blades. That is an excellent starting place for finding the blade type that you will like. It contains five of the most popular brands available. There are others not included in the sample pack, but you can explore some of those other brands later.

Crabtree and Evelyn and the Body Shop should get you started with everything but a DE razor.
Maybe one of your neighbours in the city to the north of you( And don't even TRY to pretend I was speaking of Red Deer) could find you a razor to get you started. hint hint.

If that auction does not work out...you should check out this thread where Ricky (shaveC) has a Superspeed and a Super Adjustable for sale right here on SMF...NiksaNovovic wrote:Well I am trying to get one from eBay.It's a Gillette SS 1952 for about $20 bucks including shipping. Is that a good deal? And a good starting razor? It has been cleaned and sterilized and it looks like it's in nice shape. It's item number 320112327791.

If you check frequently, there is usually someone selling a razor of interest on here.
BTW Thanks for rubbing it in about the "3" Crabtree & Evelyns...
