Ikon Razors

Let's talk about single and double edged razors and the blades that they use.

Ikon Razors

Post by Silky Glide » Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:08 pm

I bought a limited edition (number 35 of 99) Ikon Bulldog Open Comb from another member on this forum back in August. I liked it so much that I recently bought a closed comb Bulldog and a Long-Handled open comb at Pasteur's in NYC as well (at $65, quite the bargain). I really like the weight and balance of the stainless steel handle and the knurling is so good it practically grips your hand. I find that the closed comb is a bit mild for me but I get the smoothest, most comfortable shave I have ever had with the open comb head. I understand that there were problems early on in production with the open comb head being overly agressive, but I think that the right adjustments were made because this is one sweet shaver - comfortable but BBS every time. I have not tried the Feather SS model yet, but at twice the price of an Ikon, I do not see how it can be twice as good. My Merkurs and Gillettes are moving to the back of my rotation in favor of these SS beauties.

Yes, the iKon Open Comb Deluxe gives me better shaves than any razor I've used. I've tried many, and still own more than one hundred. Mine is #07 with the Bulldog handle.

The iKon beats my previous favorite, the English NEW, by a significant margin. It hits the smooth/aggressive sweet spot, delivering effortless BBS shaves.

My NEW has now been demoted to travel razor.

Chuck

My understanding is the pre-production prototypes were known to be aggressive. I have #94 of the Father's Day 2010 production run of 100, an open comb with the heavy bulldog handle. It's a beautiful piece but not my "go to" by any measure.

i owned a pre-production ikon; a open comb with a tech handle

its was very aggressive but the shave was as close as one could get..
after a couple/three weeks i learned to use lesser blade angle and then the razor shaved smoother and still bbs every time.

i used that razor for almost a year..sold it off, because the barberpole
is much nicer to deal with..

all in all i really liked the ikon and the knurling on the handle is the best ever.

Will have a few new stainless steel iKon's coming out in 2011

Bit of a sneak peak here of the special deep diamond knurling that offers such a pronounced grip when shaving in a wet and soapy environment.

I have #86 OC with the heavy bulldog handle, it's a very good razor in my top 5.

On the Ikon website, it looks like they are selling a premium shaver called a "CNC" for $125 without a wooden box and $150 with a wooden box, about 30% more than their regular SS shaver. Has anyone tried this model? Is it worth the extra $$?

Can you just get an Ikon head, and is it compatible with a Tech handle?

I have one of Greg's Extended Tech handles from a couple of years ago. I bought the handle to fit a Gillette head and it is an exact fit for any of the Merkur, EJ/M, or Gillette heads. My plan now is to eventually buy one of Greg's OC heads to go with the handle. Meanwhile, I've got a Merkur 34c head on it, and of course, the quality of the shaves it provides with the heavier handle is very good.

Your new razor reminds me of a Pils. Is it meant to?

I don't want to say I read the guy's mind, but it has been pretty clear that he is making updated versions of razors that intrigued him using high quality metals. His first work seemed to based on the "Old Type" and per reviews he has progressed from there. If I was a metalworker and saw a neat new idea, I'd probably give a try too just to see if I could.
