Estate sale finds

Post by w5eo »

I found a Gillette Toggle F4 today at an estate sale for $1. I think I got a bargain. It is functioning perfectly but it has definitely been used for many years. Would it ruin the value to have it replated in gold or rhodium or should I just clean it and leave it at that?

I also got a red tip gillette for $0.50 and 30 NOS Shick plus Platinum injector blades for $2.00. I highly recommend estate sales.

replate it in the finish of your choice....you won't regret it..however,if it shows only minor wear and shaves fine,it may not be neccesary to replate...photos would help...

Thanks for the reply. I'd estimate that at least
30% of the plating is missing. I think I'll
get it plated as you advised.

Great finds, congratulations. I'm not sure I'd have the patience to search through all the newspaper or Craigslist notices of estate sales and then drive to one or more. How would you even know which are worth checking out? I'll have to give that whole idea some thought.

And it sounds like the razor definitely would be worth replating.

My wife and I go every Saturday and
usually hit all the estate sales in town.
It's just a form of entertainment for us.
It's not worth it to search for a specific
item.

Do you have any idea what that is worth? I don't mean what you paid for it.

Anyone on this forum would gladly double your investment and you'd be nuts to accept it.

You did great.

Plater

W5eo - For restoration, I would recommend the Razor Emporium's "Razor Revamp" service at www.razoremporium.com which includes complete cleaning, mechanical adjustments if needed, and a full replating. You can replate in your razor's original finish or in rhodium which is an inert metal and does not tarnish. The full revamp is not much more than replating alone. Their work is fantastic; it takes a while but is well worth the wait. And I do not work for them, I'm just a user (not a collector). Congrats on a great find.

That's full service, but expensive if all you need is replating.

Here's another proven source: http://www.restoredrazors.com/

You'll need to decide what you need and choose I guess.

Hiya,

Sad to say, but I'd steer clear of The Razor Emporium. There's other forums with threads about that company and anyone interested in using those guys should really do some reading before sending any razors in for service. Personally, my experience was less than wonderful. Matter of fact, one of the owners is a banned SMF member, which I didn't know for quite a while.

Sigh, I also can't recommend Reliable Electroplating either. Yeah, my dealings with Dale weren't what I was hoping for.

Now I know many people have had good luck with both these companies. Maybe I just had some bad luck, but I kinda doubt that's the case.

Sorry I can't be giving more positive reviews,

Martin

I have no personal experience, but I have read several times that this is an excellent source for replating.

My wilfe and I have been doing alot of estate sailing :?: lately but I have yet to find any vintage razors. My fantasy is finding 100 unopened packs of persona 74s and buying them all for 5.00 8)
