Vintage blades snag on ebay

Post by Shave4Fun »

Total: $6.75 for 20 blades = .34 cents/blade
If the Gillette Thins shave like the last ones I had, they'll be excellent.

great find ! as with all vintage blades, the condition in which they were stored dictates their shaving ability.

I had gotten some of the Thin Blades from member Tim (AKA TRBeck) some time back and had been looking for more.

I'll keep you guys posted on the results.

Thanks,
Roger

Well, we're five days on; what are you finding versus modern blades?

Nothing yet. Still on a Dorco ST301. Will try in a day or two.

Used one of the Gillette Thins today in a 1959 Super-Speed.

The ones I noted from TRBeck were of more recent vintage, but this blade looks new and gave an excellent shave.

How long does a Thin last? And here I thought we were all pretty leery about using an ancient non-stainless blade...

These blades have very clean edges - Must have been stored in a dry environment. I have had some vtg. blades that did not look so good. Of course, we really don't know what we have until we break the package open.

I will let y'all know how many shaves I get.

I still have a partial pack of Thins from the early '60's that came with an eBay lot of other vintage blades, Spoilers or Wilkinsons.

These Thins are good for one DFS, then toss. I have managed two so-so shaves with certain (not all) Gillette Blues, and one decent shave, period, with a Super Blue. The shaves from the Thins were as good as with many current blades, and better than the best shaves I've had with the vintage Blues or Super Blues.

As always with blades, YMMV.

Up to shave #3 on the THIN. We'll see how many more I get.

On another note, I used one of the Made in England Wilkinsons this morning in a '47 Super-Speed and the shave was superb. It is a chromium blade then a special layer of chromium compound for hardness, durability and corrosion resistance. At this point I would compare it the Light Brigades.

The later Thins and Blues had the PTFE coating added without any real promotion of such. They tend to last a long time and be protected from rusting by the coating, if unused. These appear to be to old to have his happen. Best I can tell they started this in around 1970-72. On the thins, they continued up until 1988-89 when production moved to France. I have some French made thins in American looking packaging from 1989 that also have the coating. You can tell back then, because they had the PTFE patent that begins with 307....... on the blades.
