blade cost

Let's talk about single and double edged razors and the blades that they use.

blade cost

Post by nicodemus38 »

why is it that since I started looking for blades again, after a 2 month break, the prices have gone nuts?

I mean some places charge the same for derby, persona, and Gillette..... and not cheaply either.

I just don't see what should have caused it.

Nic, I'm pretty sure that the price for Perma-Sharp Supers, a favorite of mine, has gone down since I checked previously. I recently checked prices at a couple of vendors and they were generally along the lines of what I expected. You and I may be looking at different blades and different vendors, however, so I can't explain your observation of prices.

Gillette silver blue 5 pack 2.25
Astra Platinum 5 pack 2.00
Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum Double Edge Blades, Black (5 Blades) 2.75
german made Wilkinson sword, 5 pack 2.75

I can get the same Wilkinson blades for 1.19 a pack plus tax locally.. Last year these blades were cheaper. did the Gillette release of the 9 packs of Brazilian blades change the market somehow?

Nic, I don't use new Wilkinson Sword blades, so I can't speak to their pricing. For blades of interest, I generally look at prices for packs of 100 and I haven't noticed much, if any, change. The price of Brazilian Gillettes sold at Walgreen's shouldn't affect prices of the unrelated Wilkinson Swords at online vendors.

I haven't noticed any increases and if anything many blades have dropped a little. Of course, you have to buy in bulk, min. 100, to save money.

riddle me this then folks....

astra superior platinum 5 pack, 2.00

astra superior platinum 5 pack, 20 count store display for 18.00

if they can sell me the store display pack of 20 tucks for 18 cents a blade,

which would mean a cost of .90 cents per tuck of 5 blades.

then why must they charge me 1.10 for the privilege of purchasing a single tuck of blades?

Nic -

IMO it's all about costs and shelf space. Retailing is a world of its own.
1) It is more expensive to have store clerks stocking shelves with individual tucks than with packs of 100.
2) Retailers measure profit per unit of shelf space. The shelf space occupied by packs of 100 will generate much more sales a (and hence profit) than individual tucks, meaning that individual tucks have to be priced higher to generate the same profit per unit of shelf space compared to bulk packages.

What country are you in? As well, to get a break you need to buy in bulk.

Nic, I'm depending on you to get it figured out, and am hoping you can let me know, for no other reason besides passive curiosity. I (for one) have no information on the mathematics behind pricing of razor blades.

I'm pretty sure they sell them for as much as they can get.

this is an internet retailer, everything has to be pulled for an order by the same person in back between smoke breaks.

I don't worry about the cost of the blades.

Because I'm still using blades which I got by PIF.

And I get more shaves than the average person per blade.
I'm shaving to look good.

Buying bulk is almost always less expensive. The vendor gets more cash today and moves more inventory. A 100 ml cologne is usually only about 20% more than a 50ml of the same product. About the only thing I've not seen discounted for buying in quantity is gasoline.
