Are Safety Razors Really Safe?

As the name points out, it's called a Safety Razor. Is it really safe or is it dangerous? If it's not safe then why is it called a safety razor?

It was more safe in use than the straight razors that preceded it, which is to say less likely to produce cuts or nics in the hands of a careful user.

Just got my Schick Krona in the mail today. I haven't used it yet, I'm trying to figure out how to use it. I know how to load the blades but I WAS unsure if I had to use a certain side or any side. I got that figured out, that when you use a double edge safety razor you can use either side. I'm going to let my beard grow out for another few days just to get warmed up for the first shave with my Krona.

A couple of days' growth is probably about right for what you seek to accomplish, but much more will actually make the shave more difficult.
