The ATT Revised Gem G1 razor

Well, the G1 head finally arrived yesterday and I mated it with a Timeless Plaid handle and used it this morning.

What bugs me.

The little hook thingie that holds it all together needs to be rethought. Small part, old age, dropsy and cats simply don't work well with little bitty parts.

What I liked.

Once all the pieces parts were together the razor was sturdy, pretty and stable. The shave was really surprising. This is the very first modern razor where it simply felt right from the moment I put it to my face. There was absolutely no learning curve. A two pass & touch very first shave resulted in a truly PDG shave that was as good as I get from the razors I have been using for over a half century.

I had tried the earlier version GEM razor from ATT but we just didn't fit. I could not get a really PDG shave no matter how many passes or what pre-shave prep I used. It looked far but felt foul. With this iteration though ATT seems to have gotten it right. I would say that today's shave may have been one of the best GEM format shaves I have ever had and one of the most pleasant shave from any blade format.

Summary.

Great razor and great shave BUT...
is it so much better that the price can be justified? Probably not. Yet every once in a while I enjoy steak instead of brisket, real milkshakes instead of frozen custard. I consider this razor simply another simple pleasure.

jar, I'm not familiar with the Gem GI razor. Maybe I'm the only one here who can say that. Would it be possible to post photos and maybe a bit of info about the G1.

I'll try to get some today.

AbE:

So here they are.

ATT is Above The Tie, a small US operation with Stainless Steel razors made in the US. They use 303 steel which may not be a stainless as some other grades but is a nice product. At the current time they also offer razors made from aluminum and even copper. They have Double Edge and Double Edge slant razors, AC format razors and now even a GEM format razor.

Three ATT razors; SE2 on left (AC format), G1 in center (GEM format), S2 (Double Edge Slant format) on right.

The number 1 indicates a closed comb while a 2 indicates and open comb. In their Double Edge razors they offer three levels of base plates in mild(M), regular(r) and aggressive(H) to suit individual preferences. You can even order a package with all three base plates.

But in this thread it is the G1, a closed comb GEM blade format razor.

Image

The Cap is scalloped to reduce drag and the base plate uses holes instead of slots. The unusual feature is that it is a three piece head, the top and bottom plates along with a hooked and threaded part that holds everything together.

Image

I find the easiest way to load and assemble the razor is to place the cap on a soft surface like a towel, put the blade on the cap lined up at the slot, then insert that extra little piece with the hook to the front, drop the base plate on the pile and line it up so that the notches slip into place and then add the handle. It's actually easier to do than to explain BUT I don't try doing it over the sink.

As mentioned in the OP it is a really mild but efficient razor that gives me easier and closer saves than any of my GEM/EverReady razors and even better, smoother and more comfortably than with my Blackland Sabre.

That's a handsome razor. Thanks for the pics and explanation of how it all goes together. Calling it a GEM and having it use the old-fashioned (but currently produced) blade is a great idea. I hope ATT sells a lot of these. Very unique!
