all i can say is WOW

i had bought this from gatorade some time back and finally decided to use it. i wish i had not waited so damn long !!!!!

the shave was so much smoother than the Merkur HD, i had it at setting 3.

i felt this one is almost the same weight as the Merkur HD, has any1 measured the weight of these two razors ??

for those who care to know :) i used a Derby blade and Arko commando shave cream.

the Merkur HD goes into storage and the GA becomes the day2day razor from now on :)

later,
-R.

I had received one from Gator as well, it shaves very well however I still use my HD every once in a while and now Gator just sent me a 40'ss which is also a regular in my rotation.

and now...a fatboy is on it's way from Gator...man i'm gonna put Gators kids through college by the end of the year....lol...damn razor pimp.

rahul, Well, FWIW, that's been my experiance all along. The vintage Gillettes from that general era have always worked smoother/better for me then the fixed blade Merkurs. That's why I've always tended to recommend them to new DE shavers who come onto the forums. I know that it's ultimately a personal thing, but I really do believe that the Gillettes are a better bet for the majority of gents coming over to traditional DE shaving. Certainly seems to have been true for you, anyway.

Gordon

Yes, I had recently posted about my conversion from the Merkur HD to the adjustable Gillette. I have a Fat Boy and a Slim and I agree with your take on them. FWIW, I went to my barber on Staurday and brought one of my Fat Boy Gillettes with me. (I like it so much that I recently picked up another as a backup). It is a 1959 (code E) and in excellent condition. When it was my turn to get a haircut I showed it to my barber, Tony, and the next thing I knew a few of the other barbers stopped whatever they were doing and a crowded around my chair to look at the razor. It was all, 'Oooo's and Ahs' as each had to take a look. Then they reminisced about the good old days of DE's for home use and str8 razor shaves in the shop. They complained that they could no longer use their str8s and have to use shavettes, using a new blade for each customer. They complained how rarely they are called to give shaves in the shop anymore--no one has the time they said.

I rotate my Slim and Fat Boy--they both give a wonderful shave! :D

cool !!! i guess i am not alone thinking that the GA felt better than the Merkur HD :)

one thing i forgot to mention in my original post was that i felt the GA was "less aggressive" than the Merkur HD.

whenever sum1 said this earlier, i cud not understand, but i saw the light last nite :D

later,
-R.

PS - i guess i better pick up a back up like Neal did in case something catastrophic happens to my GA.

time to look for gatorades for sale posts

HD = 2.7 oz, Gillette slim adjustable = 2.5 oz. Both gold plated. :)

Mine is at 2. That is all I really need. I have a slim and one from Gator which should be at home waiting for me. Can't remember if it is a slim or a fat boy??? Think it is a slim though. I really like the shave I get from this razor.

Well, I used a Fatboy for about a month or two until I got a new HD two weeks ago. So far, I am using a Derby blade and the HD is serviceable. I mean, I use a Slant bar for touchup even with other razors, but with a Derby in the HD, and then using the Slant, I am getting consistently great shaves. Now I will go back to the Fatboy in about a week or so to use it for a couple of weeks to compare, but the HD is my first really good stab at a fixed head DE. I have no qualms with it. However, I will say when I use the Fatboy, I learned that technique to open it up past 9 and I am fixed at 13, so I do not know how much help that is for most of you men

I usually have mine set at 3, though sometimes I will move it to 4 (bad habit I'm trying to break). I'm trying to minimize variables as I learn. Same shaver, same cream (Nancy Boy), different blades (bought a sampler from John). I don't need to mess around with anything else right now.

Rahul, I've shaved with Gillette Adjustables for over forty years, and have used them set at about every conceivable setting and combination ( up to '9' that is, I've never modified/busted one to set it higher ), and I do the first pass at '3' and the next two set on '2'. So, if after forty years, I set it that way, it's okay for you to leave yours set on '3' ( chuckle ). Happy shaving.

Gordon

When I started to shave with GA razors I set them to 4. I have since gone up to 5 and haven't needed to change that setting. If anything I would go back down to 4 if I were to change the setting. :D
