If I have a browser window open, either Explorer or Firefox, and I close it, any and all unread posts do not show up as unread when I re-open the window. Am I missing a simple setting/switch somewhere?

Do you navigate by clicking the links (forum headers), or by using the back/forward buttons/keystrokes?
Are cookies enabled on your computer?
To update "properly", you should use the links to navigate the forums, and ensure you have cookies enabled.
If you use the 'back/forward', try to refresh (F5) before you close.

Once I have finished with one forum, I generally click on the logo to refresh. Then move on to the next forum. I've never tried refreshing before I close the window. Generally, once I have logged in, I will read through all the posts I want to read. However, since IT at work has blocked the forum out completely, it is a bit of a moot point.

Have much the same problem m'self. It's a wonder they haven't blocked this site yet! Already unable to see half the photos (flikr, photobucket,...) and none of the videos (youtube, etc.).
Do you know what kind of filtering software they use? Some can be avoided through the use of free proxy servers like url0, url1, myamigos, etc. Proxies to be avoided whenever filtering software is used have the word 'proxy' in their URL. There are also paid proxies, and if many more of my faves get blocked, that may be a route I'd consider taking.

You might also consider that corporate IT is blocking the site because they don't want you to be reading it at work. Circumventing this decision by going through a proxy isn't likely to make your bosses happy. But, as with anything else, YMMV.

True that a company has the right to block whatever they see as counterproductive to the bottom line, but you should know if your company has taken a stance against 'anything that wastes time while you are on the clock', or if they are blocking all forums to keep out "bad"/illegal activity.
Shavemyface et. al.--not harmful to the network, the environment, the children;
Porn/hacker/militia sites et. al.--can be considered less benevolent.
Is your boss an "efficient taskmaster", or trying to keep child smut off the company's harddrives?
Is IT approachable?
As stated previously, YMMV.

IT handles our "intranet" for about 40 stores. It is not on a case by case bases. I think a lot of the "blocking" has to do with bandwidth, so new sources are blocked because of streaming video. I'm not worried about grief from my boss, but I don't want to be disrespectful to him.
