Floris 89 Line to Expand!

Post by Ken »

Last night I looked on the Floris website and there were no products listed when clicking on 89. I called Floris today and they said that the 89 EdT was on backorder. More important, the person I spoke with said that Floris is going to bring back the 89 line. I asked which products and she said that she believed that they would have all the typical products in the other lines. She wasn't sure of the date but thought that it would be sometime between spring and fall.

So, good news for a change!

However, she did confirm that the Madison Avenue store is closing, not moving, but that Floris will continue to have an office in the U.S.--in New Jersey--from which phone orders can be taken.

Ken, That is good news, indeed....at least the No 89 part of it. I know that we at SMF were not the only gents to suggest ( forcefully ) that they bring back the No 89 range. Not to nitpick, but I do hope that they package it in appropriate livery. Regarding the shop, that is kind of what I figured that they had in mind. In the past, several other upper crust English firms have gone that route, and Penhaligons started out with it; ie an American retail distribution locale with an 800 number etc. FWIW, I thought that the 'renovation' and expansion of their NYC shop a few years back was a major mistake. They probably doubled their already hefty rent, and the shop lost all it's former charm and 'authenticity' as well, IMO. Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Good news indeed. I want to try the shaving soap and cream.

This is some of the best news I've received on the toiletries front. It suggests to me that sales figures for the No. 89 cologne are very good and that it will be around for some time to come. It takes the sting out of the loss of Floris Sandalwood.

Fantastic! I have an old shaving soap in Floris 89 that I have been excruciatingly parsimonious in using. From this line, I have only used the EdT and the shaving soap. Was there an aftershave balm in this line at one time? If so, how did it compare to the usual suspects?

Troy, I used to use No 89 products quite a bit. At that time, the line consisted of; cologne ( both 3oz. & 1.7oz. sizes ), traditional splash A/S, hard shave soap, bath soap, and talc. There was neither a soft shaving cream, nor an A/S balm that I recall. However, that does not mean that they might not include those items if they bring the range back.

It will be interesting to see what they bring back as "the full line," as it seems their scents don't always come in all of their available products anyway.

Long...too long...ago, I remember using 89 roll-on underarm deodorant, I bought it both in London and at Colonial Drug. 89 was a great shaving soap, and perhaps I will now be able to break open that last puck of 89 that I was saving to give to my son with his first (Plisson) brush! Cripes, I wish my father had been that good to me!

Buzz, I hear you, for sure....and your son definately will be a lucky young shaver. Mine got an AOS 'Fine Badger' and tube of Taylors Lavender and had to make do ( chuckle.....although I see that one of them snitched one of my tubes of Coate's Sandalwood this afternoon ).

Anyway, FWIW, I had this information confirmed by someone I know who was in the Floris shop in London last Friday. The story, apparently, is that the recent popular James Bond film created such an interest in No 89 that they decided to bring back the line. Suppossedly, there is a scene near the end of the movie where Bond opens his leather bag and one can see a bottle of No 89 in there. I don't know, because I missed the very end of the film, when I saw it. Dang!....and here I thought it was all the pressure they'd been getting from knowledgeable old school shavegeeks and aficionados ( like me! ) that had convinced them to bring it back. But no, it was the power of Hollywood....should have known...

Thanks for the info, Gordon. If they bring back the shave soap and it is exactly the same as the old No. 89 shave soap, I will be a happy camper indeed. How did the No. 89 bath soap compare to their Rose Geranium version?

Troy, Yeah, that thought crossed my suspicious mind too; that they might diddle with the fragrance. But, hopefully not, as the cologne has been available this whole time. Still, the two tins of No 89 talc I bought in NYC at Xmas do seem to be slightly different then I remember it being....but, maybe it's just my imagination. The bath soap was the 'normal' excellent Floris soap. In the bath I kind of like the Rose Geranium better, or at least, as much, but the RG scent is also more appropriate for my wife, and since we share the shower soap, that is also a factor. She doesn't get to use any rose bath soap, for the same reason.
