Isn't there enough of an astringent effect from the clay itself, that adding witch hazel would be overkill? If you want to use a Thayer's product, I would think the alcohol-free versions would be best. Otherwise, just plain ol water.

I would just use water. Something else may actually make the clay less effective.

A few drops of 1996, Napa Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon.

No kidding.

cabernet...??? i'm not buying that one my friend. i picked up some thayer's and distilled water to test with after my rose hydrosol runs out. it looks like QED had a big jump in price as did EM's on the hydrosol.

Water is enough to reconstitute clay powder. My wife tells me her spa mixes French Green clay with Evian, plus honey and avocado. (Oh, please!)

The clay adsorbs (not absorbs) the impurities in the epidermis as it dries on your face, causes dry skin cells to slough off, and stimulates blood flow to the epidermis. Adding anything other than water to your clay probably neither helps nor hinders.

dennis miller's early routine included a rant on Evian water. evian = naive backwards... i never forgot that.

I had good luck w/my last mask by adding the following.

1 drop peppermint EO,
4 drops tea tree EO,
4 drops rosemary EO,
6 drops rosehip oil

The clay already brings the blood to your skin, but I think these EOs do as well, and give you a nice scent/tingly feeling while the mask dries.

And I've heard that Rosemary promotes hair growth (unfortunately I have a slowly receding hairline) so I'm all for it!

Hope it's ok to post this question here and that I might get an answer.

I use Thayer's witch hazel non alcohol toner.

How does everyone mix the clay and with what to get the lumps out. I tried my finger in a tea cup and slowly kept adding liquid. wasn't smooth enough.

also what should the consistency be--thickish paste or more runny?

thanks

i have not had too large an issue with lumpy clay. it does take a while but i really just use my finger in a small bowl. maybe you could let the whole thing rest for a while to let the liquid break down the lumps?

i think consistency is a personal choice. i like mine similar to toothpaste.

Best way to really get rid of lumps is to either let it rest as SS stated, or take a fork to it. The closer the prongs of the fork, the better, as it breaks up the lumps nicely.

I like to be able to do stuff (walk around, type this message, etc) while I'm wearing a mask, so I like mine a bit thick.

thanks SS and Joshua for the information.

i will try letting the liquid absorb a bit but the fork idea should also work well. Guess i'll use a small bowl rather than a teacup.
Also like the idea of a toothpaste consistency.

btw how much clay do you start out with ????? 1 Tablespoon or more????

thanks again,

mike

I use about a tablespoon, whatever the directions said on the back of the tub.

I usually use 1 Tablespoon of clay to 1 Tablespoon of DaVinci Water. Those two amounts together yield the best consistency in final product, for me.

If you're doing this for acne related skin care, then Rosehip Seed, Tamanu, Sea Buckthorn, and Vitamin E oils are all very good.

I think AACJ is spot on with his CabSauv / Merlot recommendation.
