The Scent Of Which Legends Are Made

Post by The Truthinator »

I was just browsing this forum and sometimes there is someone mentioning a famous person like Cary Grant and informing others that Grant wore Acqua di Parma and a legend like Churchill wore Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet, Visconti liked the smell of Knize Ten etc.

So, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great, if we just compiled a list with the names of famous people, that we look up to and that are truly legendary like the aforementioned gentlemen and add to their names the names of colognes and after shaves they used?

I think, we should put up the list in the following way:

Cary Grant - Acqua di Parma
Winston Churchill - Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet
Lucchino Visconti - Knize Ten

And if someone wants to add a name to the list, he just copies it from the poster above him, writing down the name and the scent, so that in the end we get an overview of every name mentioned.

I hope, this has not been done before, but I could not find any such post.

Stephen, Yeah, for whatever reason, I find such stuff interesting. I've mentioned a fair number of such connections in random posts since I've been here ( and on the old Wetshavers forum ). It's tricky, though. There's a fair amound to misinformation out there, especially from Creed, I've found. BTW, Churchill also bought from Floris and T&H, at the least, and Visconti is generally associated with Penhaligon's Hammam Bouquet, not Knize Ten. David Niven was partial to Knize though, it's said.

Thanks for your reply, Gordon.

I think, I read something about the connection of Visconti and Knize Ten on this forum.

Cary Grant - Acqua di Parma
Winston Churchill - Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet (also Floris and T&H)
Lucchino Visconti - Penhaligon's Hammam Bouquet
David Niven - Knize Ten

Again, that list should be taken with a bowl of salt. As pointed out by Gordon, Creed is full of horse manure. Also I find it weird that three American presidents use the same perfume, Gendarme. For those who ignore it, a gendarme is a sort of police officer in France, except he is affiliated with the army, not the Ministry of the Interior.

I'm sure most is marketing fodder perpetrated from the fragrance houses themselves.

Yes, rather. Here's a real one for your list, however. Frank Sinatra: Yardley English Lavender ( for men, obviously ), and when that disappeared, Puig Lavende. Prince Charles is said to be fond of Trumpers Limes and Floris No 89 ( as well as, probably, some bespoke stuff that Floris does for him ). Charles Boyer liked Knize Ten also. And, of course, Napoleon insisted on a light eau de cologne of the 4711/Jean Farina type,(as did Richard Wagner ), as well as being nuts for Brown Windsor bath soap.

Another allegedly famous wearer of Floris No. 89 is of course a certain Mr J. Bond.......

Seriously though, I believe that Fleming was a great fan of the fragrance himself, hence the reason why Bond is supposed to wear it.

Gareth, There is no mention of Floris No 89 in any of the Ian Fleming Bond novels or short stories, believe me, I've checked ( chuckle ). Floris bath products are mentioned in two or three cases, but not cologne. In fact, Bond is never mentioned as having a personal cologne choice, although Lentheric A/S is provided by Dr. No in the posh prison cell that Bond finds himself in. However, Ian Fleming himself patronized the Floris shop, and may conceiveably have worn No 89, as it was first offered in the early 1950s, but I don't know that for a fact. That business about No 89 being 'the cologne of James Bond' ( or another version has it as Eucris....which didn't even exist as a cologne at that time ) is all over the internet, but it's NOT in the actual books. Still, I rather fancy that No 89 would be pretty much his style, if anything specific was mentioned.

Chris, So they say, and it's still available, or was very recently, at any rate. I have a bottle in the hall closet. Not bad stuff, although I'm told it's not quite as punchy as it was years ago.

Gordon, I went to order another bottle and Chapman said it had been discontinued, at least here in the US. I got their last bottles. Carrol and Co sell their own version of it but they don't give out samples. I wonder how close to the original it is.

If it's still available in Europe still I'd be inclined to try it.

Speaking of discontinuation and Atkinsons has anyone noticed that their English Lavender is now very scarce? One website in Europe (I think) shows an altogether different bottle design of it and has it listed as discontinued. Chapmans doesn't carry it anymore and the 8 oz version seems unobtainable anymore. Someplace it time still has some but only the 4 oz version. I'm beginning to think it's disappearing but am not quite sure.

Chris
