Street Shave in Calcutta

Post by colinmono »

Spotted this picture of a gentleman receiving a shave on the street in Calcutta today which I thought might be of interest. Second picture down after the link.

Funny, I was looking at those this morning, and thought I'd probably have the same look on my face if I had to be shaved squatting in the street!

I'd love to be able to do that - my knees just wouldn't co-operate. . .

Give a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day.
Set a man on fire, he'll be toasty for the rest of his life.

There is a Michael Palin travelogue, I think it is in Full Circle, where he gets a straight razor shave in India (I can't remember if it is in Calcutta, but it might be). The barber is set up for business under a tree in the middle of a park. The best part, though, is that the barber is blind!

The very same thought crossed my mind... I'd probably topple over backward before the first pass was complete!

I couldn't help wandering whether any soap was used - can see some on the barbers other hand I think, perhaps he is just doing a final "polishing" pass.
