A spiffy Hugh Hefner at 84

A spiffy Hugh Hefner at 84

Post by 95% »

Some of you may have seen yesterday's story about the engagement of Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris, a 24-year-old Playboy model:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/40810232/ ... rtainment/

While it would be interesting to explore the dynamics of that relationship, I was struck by how sharply Hef was turned out in the picture. If I should ever reach the age of 84, I'd like to present myself as well as he does.

i wonder what it is that she sees in that old, grey, wrinkly, lecherous, decrepid multi-millionaire?

Also, her teeth look a little crooked, that's why I passed on her.... :)

Her motive is obvious enough, but what is his? Sex is not a high priority for an octogenarian. Hefner likes to surround himself with beautiful women, but he can do that as a bachelor. My guess is that he craves love - who doesn't? - and that in his dotage he believes she loves him, or perhaps he pretends that she does. Why not play the game, he reasons. After all, he has little left to lose.

I remember looking at my first centerfold a friend spirited out of his uncle's garage. I heard THUS SPRACHT ZARATHUSTRA and self corrected a juvenile heart murmer.
Playboy used to be fun with a long deceased editor who mixed in great fiction, the interviews, social issues and social skills. Hef even penned his magnum opus philosophy.
I think it was about the time they took out the staples it began changing.
I'm not blaming Hef alone; but the women, the ladies became assembly line barbie dolls courtesy of cosmetic surgeons and the sexual revolution let a few political prisoners out best kept jailed; real pornography like childporn, a rise in STDs including the new and improved supersized AIDS and a rising divorce rate because nobody seemed to have any philosophy,Hef's or other.
Yes, he looks 'spiffy' compared to the silk pajamas and pipe. Hef can soak in his grotto like a roman senator in the baths and not worry about the masses as long as the games keep us happy.
I got to meet my centerfold, Claudia queen of the B movies at a famous stop on a local canyon road. She signed a napkin, commented even then playboy wasn't fun anymore and was killed minutes later in Malibu when her VW hit a truck

I have the August 1974 issue of Playboy, which is tasteful, even prim by today's standards. The photographs are no more pornographic than the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens. The cartoons are mild, and a few are genuinely funny. Best of all, the issue includes a first-rate short story about a stunt artist who climbs up the Washington Monument using the tools of a rock climber. It has nothing at all to do with sex or the "Playboy philosophy" which Hef delivered in endless installments in the 1960's. We don't usually think of the 70's as a golden age, but this particular relic shows that our society still recognized limits in sexual expression.

When advised that any sexual activity might have fatal consequences, Hefner said, "If it kills her, so be it"

Maybe I'm just a romantic at heart, but I hope these two kids don't rush into this. They should take their time, really get to know each another; why not enjoy a long engagement, a few years at least? They should take it slow, if they want to succeed at building a life-long relationship.

On second thought, maybe they'd better see if the Grand Ballroom at the Beverley Wilshire is free for a reception this weekend. They probably won't need a lot of time for conversations like whether their long-term goals are truly compatible.

I pay no attention to Hef or his empire these days but judging by that small picture, it appears the mortician is already practicing on the old lecher whilst he still has a pulse.
