A few that I like:

We may lose and we may win, but we will never be here again ...

The Eagles

...
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

Pink Floyd

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The Who

Best ... Steve
To want what I have
To take what I'm given with grace
For this I pray

Love Cohen. Cohen, Dylan, Springsteen, Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash. I could be pretty happy with just the output of those five songwriters for my listening pleasure pretty much indefinitely. If you let me include the output of Steve Earle, Hank Williams, Sr., John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Matthew Ryan, you'd cover 75% of what I listen to these days anyway.

Long as I remember rain's been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground
- John Fogerty

I'm gonna find me a river, one that's cold as ice.
And when I find me that river, Lord I'm gonna pay the price, Oh Lord!
I'm goin' down in it three times, but Lord I'm only comin up twice.
- Hank Williams

So I lean up from my easy chair
I rub my three day beard
And give that thousand yard stare
As I recall all the time and the money we spent
Before I became irrelevant
-Matthew Ryan

It's a perpetual stone in my shoe
One that I'll always be trying to shake loose
An ache in my chest and a thorn in my pride
-Matthew Ryan

And I was all fingers numb holding a brown paper lunch
Twelve years old and already ashamed
-Matthew Ryan

Happy Hour by Matthew Ryan
Well the clocks are quiet
Little Joe's in jail
He got stopped late Sunday
Piss drunk and ordinary
Took a swing, no bail

And Clyde only smiles
When Mary Anne is here
You know she married too young
To a poor anyone
For money, for fear

It's happy hour
The music is loud
It's happy hour
Tell a joke
Light a smoke
Just let the day go for now

Now things aren't the same
Since Toby was killed
For a while we assumed
He got fed up and moved
For his dream in Nashville

But we're all moving targets
And it's all for sale
Either a pearl shaped pill
Is killing your will
Or you're tooth and nail

It's happy hour
The music is loud
It's happy hour
Tell a joke
Light a smoke
Just let the years go for now
Just let the years go for now

Now it's barely dark out
But it's falling light
Maybe I should go
Settle in at home
I could sit and write all night

But I've got trouble
That don't let me move
If you had everything you wished for
Then what would you live for
And what would you lose?

It's happy hour
Voices get loud
It's happy hour
Tell a joke
Light a smoke
Just let your dreams go for now
Just let your dreams go for now

Regards,
Regards,
Tim

Patty Griffin (Her songs often hit you right in the gut.)

"Tony"
I hated every day of high school
It's funny, I guess you did too
Its funny how I never knew
There I was sitting right behind you
They wrote it in the local rag
Death comes to the local fag
I guess you finally stopped believing
That any hope would ever find you
Well I know that story,
I was sitting right behind you

Hey Tony, what's so good about dying
He said I think I might do a little dying today
He looked in the mirror and saw
A little faggot starin back at him
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away

Somber story of a bad band at a bad venue + the Titanic sinking, the Oklahoma dustbowl migration, and the Lincoln assassination.

Gillian Welch
"April 14"

When the iceberg hit
Oh, they must have known
God moves on the water
Like Casey Jones

So I walked downtown
On my telephone
And took a lazy turn
Through the redeye zone

It was a five-band bill
A two-dollar show
I saw the van out in front
From Idaho

And the girl passed out
In the backseat trash
There was no way they'd make
Even a half a tank of gas

They looked sick and stoned
And strangely dressed
No one showed
From the local press

But I watched 'em walk
Through the bottom land
And I wished I played
In a rock 'n' roll band

Hey, hey
It was the fourteenth day of April

Well they closed it down
With the sails in rags
And the swept up the fags
And the local rags

Threw the plastic cups
In the plastic bags
And the cooks cleaned the kitchen
With the staggers and the jags

Ruination day
And the sky was red
I went back to work
And back to bed

And the iceberg broke
And the Okies fled
And the Great Emancipator
Took a bullet in the back of the head...

Hemingway's Whiskey
Guy Clark

Hemingway’s whiskey warm and smooth and mean
Even when it burns it will always finish clean
He did not like it watered down he took it straight up and neat
If it’s bad enough for him you know it’s bad enough for me
Hemingway’s whiskey

You know it's tough out there a good muse is hard to find
Living one word to the next and living one line at a time
Now there's more to life then whiskey there's more to words than rhyme
Sometimes nothing works sometimes nothing shines
Hemingway’s whiskey

Sail away sail away as the day grows dim
Live hard die hard this ones for him
Hemingway’s whiskey

Hemingway’s whiskey warm and smooth and mean
Even when it burns it will always finish clean
He did not like it watered down he took it straight up an neat
If it’s bad enough for him you know it’s bad enough for me
Hemingway’s whiskey

Guy Clark is a fine writer indeed. My favorite writing of his is a song he never recorded: "Step Inside This House," which became the title song of an album of covers of other Texas writers that Lyle Lovett recorded a bit over a decade ago. Stunning song. The one you cite is brilliant, too, of course, Mike.

Step Inside This House
by Guy Clark

That picture hangin' on the wall
Was painted by a friend
He gave it to me all down and out
When he owed me ten
Now it doesn't look like much I guess
But it's all that's left of him
And it sure looks nice from right over here
When the light's a little dim

Chorus:
Step inside this house babe
I'll sing for you a song
I'll tell you 'bout where I've been
It shouldn't take too long
I'll show you all the things I own
My treasures you might say
Couldn't be more'n ten dollars worth
But they brighten up my day

Here's a book of poems I got
From a girl I used to know
I guess I read it front to back
Fifty times or so
It's all about the good life
And stayin' at ease with the world
It's funny how I love that book
And I never loved that girl

Hold this piece of glass
Up to the light comin' through the door
It's a prism glass; I found it on the road
Can't you see that tiny rainbow?
Well it's not really a prism I guess
It's just kinda broke a funny way
I was on my way to Texas
And I was headed through L.A.

This guitar was given me
By old man thomas gray
It's not too much to look at
But I pick it every day
It's been across the country
'Bout four or five times I guess
Between me and old man Tom
It never got much rest

Well that's about all I own
And all I care to I guess
Except this pair of boots
And that funny yellow vest
And that leather jacket and leather bag
And hat hangin' on the wall
Just so it's not too much to carry babe
Could I see you again next fall

Guy Clark says the above is the first song he ever wrote. I might retire right then and there if I wrote a song so perfect.

EDIT: Lyle sings it okay, too.

Well, I reckon there are a lot of real good songs I've never heard before and that's one of 'em. Thank you.

A Case of You - Joni Mitchell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6voJjexE ... ature=fvwp
Image

I remember that time you told me you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Jimmy Buffett
Margaritaville

I blew out my flip-flop Stepped on a pop-top Cut my heel had to cruise on back home But there's booze in the blender And soon it will render That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
