Straight shave in "Skyfall"
Yes, Bond gets a straight shave from the new drop dead gorgeous Bond girl. I saw the movie yesterday. There is a fairly long shave scene with a brush, soap, and a straight. He starts out lathering his face with a brush and soap from a shallow bowl. Once lathered up he answers the door with gun drawn to greet the new Bond girl (I won't give away who she really is as it will be a most pleasant surprise to Bond fans who have followed him since Dr. No. It is not revealed until the end of the movie and caused some applause and giggles, mostly from the movie goers over 50 in the audience.) He gets an amazingly close shave by the lady spy from a few full pressure passes, forehand and backhand, using nearly the full length of the blade, her gorgeous face inches away, and James keeping his composure, of course. The one liners and double entendres are classic Bond. And the lather, dry and crispy-sounding as he applies it, lasts forever. Amazing. It's a great, oh-so-classic Bond scene based on wet shaving with a straight that Daniel Craig does in classic Bond fashion. (I did imagine it with Sean Connery, yes I did.) The shaving technique is far from ideal, but the scene is fairly long and entertaining for any serious wet shaver.
There are some classic Bond scenes which fans would appreciate, such as Bond standing up in the bow of a boat, legs shoulder width apart while dressed in that classic tuxedo as he heads to meet the evil doers in a casino.
As I left the theater, I saw lined up for the evening show about a dozen middle aged couples, obviously of the age that have been following James bond from the original, come to see the movie on opening night in the US. The men were dressed in classic Bond tuxedos and were making an evening of the premier!
Bt the way, this is one of the better Bond movies. The script is intelligently written (for a Bond movie; let's keep it in perspective), there is not an over-reliance on gizmos (may be disappointing to some), the chase scenes are the ususal unbelievable, but not so outlandish that they cause instant disbelief, and the references to "classic Bond", scattered throughout the film, keep old Bond fans like me smiling. It deserves a "Well Done".

We enjoyed it a lot. The brush and razor were upmarket, nothing cheap. I'd be proud to own either of them. Reminds me of my normal morning shave with the Mrs. on my lap and telling me about many things as she expertly wields the razor.

Yep - Daniel Craig and the current Bond films are a refreshing return to type, a long time coming for those of us who refused to suffer through Pierce Bl**dy Brosnan and Timothy Bleedin' Dalton.
The shave scene was decently done, and the technique on display was at least watchable, compared to so many scenes where the director and actors have spent no time whatsoever finding out how to use a straight.
Being 48, I found the reveal at the end as to who the shaving girl is to be very amusing. I was in the minority, however my son (I'm raising him right, only the Sean Connery and Daniel Craig films in our collection) was in on it too. I also found myself shrieking with glee at the DB5 Bond springs out of the lockup. . .

Agreed! Several people in the audience whooped and clapped when Bond opened the storage locker door. I was more subdued.....more Bond-like, of course.ichabod wrote:........ I also found myself shrieking with glee at the DB5 Bond springs out of the lockup. . .

Yup - this is all over the web shaving community. I have been anticipating this movie for sometime now. And with 50 yrs of Bond, how right is it that they pulled in Adele for the title song? A great current-day tribute to Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger. What an awesome song and singer combination full-stop.
I am in a self-imposed media ban as I won't get to see it for another week so no spoilers please.

I've just now consulted with my wife, and neither of us recalls seeing him open a storage locker door or springing out of a lockup. My daughter suggests that maybe there are different versions being shown according to location??? Please don't spoil the show for those who've not seen it, so if you can help me out with a bit more description, send a PM if you can. I musta' missed somethin'.

Folks, as the Bond franchise has been famous for product placement since Ian Fleming's naked attempts in the original novels in the 1950's it may be that Bond is imitating us.
After all, what we discuss and do here is all the rage these days amongst men who have lost their connection with the past and seek to regain it. We are a part of that conduit they seek and Bond may just be promoting that.
Just my 2 cents.

This is one of the movies on my "Must-See" list, as soon as I can squeeze the time in between work and home renovation projects.

We won't spoil Skyfall for you if you don't ruin Downton Abbey for usjww wrote:Is he still driving an Aston Martin????
No -- don't tell me, I want to be surprised -- or at least surprised at not being surprised. I still get a quivering lip when they tumble the DBS V12 in Casino Royale. It makes me shudder with fear and trembling always ..... sheesh!!!!

Saw Skyfall on Day One. Bought first two seasons of Downton Abbey for the wife for Christmas and have the third season pre-ordered through PBS. I hope It arrives in time. She really enjoys those Brit mini series.
Hint in Skyfall: The Butler Did It.
Oh Yeah...That's a different movie...
Suffice it to say...you will enjoy the movie, but you must "GO TO THE THEATER TO SEE IT". I've always found it more enjoyable to go to the movie theater than to watch a movie at home on a DVD. I enjoy the atmosphere and there are no distractions (phone calls, visitors, wife talking :~) ) Where I live you have to place your cell phone and wife on silent/mute when entering the theater or risk the chance of being told to leave without a refund.
I hope everyone enjoys the movie because if you are a Bond fan, you will want to see it more than once.
Enjoy your movie...

Personally I own several straight razors but only a couple of Aston Martins.*
(*While the straight razors are full size, the Aston Martins are 1/32 scale and run on a slot car track - including a DB5 with an ejector seat).

It would be impossible, I know, but I wonder what the percentage is of men that buy a straight razor and actually stick with it. It must be very small. It takes a very "special" man to say:Pauldog wrote:When I was searching for more info, I found one blurb that said that straight razor sales have increased quite a bit since the movie came out.
Maybe sales of Aston Martins, too?
"Right. Here goes."
"It's pulling and tugging out of the box, never mind that my hand is shaking, I'm afraid of cutting my jugular/removing my nose/enlarging my mouth."
"I shall seek out help on The Internet."
"Ah."
"Shave forums. Who knew? There is a forum for everything."
"Who would visit a forum dedicated to shaving, every day?"
"Alright, I'm overwhelmed."
"I must be using the wrong soap."
"Ok, so I need a soap brush..."
"The razor is still pulling"
"Oh, it needs to be honed, WTF"
"Oooh look, pretty shiny pre-honed razor in the buy and sell forum, only $350"
"Still pulls, must be the English soap" *buys a 10 shave creams, and 20 pucks of AOS soap even though he's never used it because of rumors of discontinuation*
*bad stropping technique ruins finely honed edge*
"Hmmm." *Buys hones, new strops, diamond pastes, four sided paddles that look suspicially like S&M toys*
* Declares bankruptcy, wife who bought straight for him leaves. Beards now back in style, discovers beard forums*
