Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Oscar, I've got a new (to me) razor supposedly in the mail now from across the sea, and am hoping to be able to post about it here when I've had a chance to tend to the edge and use it, one of these days soon. I love to see your vast array of beautiful and unique razors.

Oscar those frame back razors are very interesting. How is the blade attached to the frame?

Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Squire,
The blade is simply a press fit into a slot in the spine. The point of making framebacks was to avoid the need for skilled blade grinders - they were cheaper to make and tended to appear whenever skilled labour was unavailable. Supposedly the angle between the spine and the edge is the same as on a ground blade, so they can be honed just like any other straight. I have an old one from Birmingham that probably dates around 1860. It shaves rather nicely, but is awkward to use because of the extremely stubby tail it has.

Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Squire, the Swede is pressed like Dr. Moss says. The brass frame back has a screw (look closely you'll see it) holding the blade. Occasionally you'll see a muti blade set, one razor several blades. I have a couple more, one is NIB but I have no idea where I put it. So I guess it's lost. I'll use the other for tomorrows shave.
Brothers, I look forward to seeing your new razor.

Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Yes, the brass one seemed to have a locking or tension nut at the end which prompted my question. I don't believe I've seen one of these before, I've certainly never handled one.

Oscar that frame back looks almost new, are they still being made?

Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Oscar, the razor has arrived, and I want to take a look at the existing edge and maybe dress it a bit before putting it to the test. I can't wait! I've got to get some pictures of it too. Maybe I can get that done really soon.

That's a pretty little W&B. Does it live up to it's name?

Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
It'll shave well if I sharpen well, yes it's a nice shaver but I enjoy wedges. They (wedges) can be a P.I.T.A. to sharpen but once dialed in are fine shavers, IMO.
Re: Which straight razor did you use today?
Oscar, do you use one or more layers of tape on the spine? What is your preferred method of honing a typical wedge?Oscar11 wrote:It'll shave well if I sharpen well, yes it's a nice shaver but I enjoy wedges. They (wedges) can be a P.I.T.A. to sharpen but once dialed in are fine shavers, IMO.
