Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
My first shave with the Shavecraft 101 razor was this evening. I had read elsewhere that it might be a bit milder than the Punktal 101 on which Greg based his design. With this in mind, I added a shim to increase blade exposure a bit, and enjoyed a nice close shave. I like this razor. The handle and head weigh about 108g, which to my surprise is heavier than the big Barbasol that I like so well. I think the Barbasol weighs around 95g. The Shavecraft came with Greg's Bulldog handle, and it has excellent knurling and the length is not long, just right for this razor. It has a substantial feel about it. I have no complaints about the razor's physical characteristics or the quality of the shave. Hats off to Greg @ IKON.

Gary, I just got mine as well and have had two shaves with it. It surprised me at how mild it is.
It's very smooth though and feels great as it glides along. I'm going to try a shim as well to see if I can get it to be a little more aggressive, and hopefully closer as well.

Bruno, could you compare this razor's mildness with any other razor?

Doesn't this come with a dual OC/SB head? Just how mild can these run with an open comb?

Brothers how does it compare to the ikon oc 2013?
Re: Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
Murray, for me it's very similar to some of the Gillette SS razors. It's very close as well to the Merkur open comb I have.CMur12 wrote:Bruno, could you compare this razor's mildness with any other razor?

Both sides of the 101 shave about the same in terms of closeness. I can't really tell any difference between the two sides.

Anthony, this is the only IKON product I've got, other than a handle from a couple of years ago. Sorry I can't help.stanthony wrote:Brothers how does it compare to the ikon oc 2013?

Thank you brothers
Re: Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
Gary Thanks for mentioning using a Shim with this razor. I was concerned it was too mild for my taste, With a shim it's a whole different razor. Two shaves in I am really enjoying it!!!!

Has anyone determined what the head is made of? I keep hearing aluminum.
Re: Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
As of now, both my son and son-in-law have their very own ShaveCraft 101 razors. Thanks to Ikon and Bullgoose, I was able to give those guys something useful that should last many years.

Just to find the proper guage for the SC 101, yesterday I used 3 shims. The razor felt for all the world very similar to the '11 Muhle R41. A bit dangerous, even though I shed no blood. With that in mind, tonight I used only 2 shims. That seems to be the sweet spot for my particular perceptions and expectations. On the other hand, the eighty (80) year old Big Bad Barbasol needs no shims to cut perfectly.

Gary, after my initial curiosity with the 101, I haven't used it much. After I got hooked on the Muhles (R89, 41) nothing compares to them and the 101 has been put in the back of the rotation.brothers wrote:Just to find the proper guage for the SC 101, yesterday I used 3 shims. I find that the Shavecraft 101 with 2 shims is about my ideal DE. Right there next to the Barbasol. I get a solid and smooth face feel from it. Some of the others feel somehow harsh, and that isn't what I expect from a really good DE. IKON has my respect and congratulations on this razor.

I can understand why you guys are using shims to make a razor work but instead of fooling with it I believe I would just find one that worked unaltered.

Yes... You're right of course... I've got some that are cutting as close or closer, but they're harsh. Others, not harsh, but not smooth enough. These are DEs. The Noxzema/Kai Twin and the Trac II are closer and smoother, but they're also lightweight plastic carts and don't have the nice solid "authoritative" feel of the 101, and they need pressure, unlike the DEs. The Barbasol is the DE that comes closer than any other to the 101. I've posted somewhere around here that the 101 gives me a shave comparable to one of my straight razors, the Henkels Friodur, I believe.

Re: Shavecraft 101 razor from IKON
I'm curious, what are you using as a shim? I have the 101 and find it to be a nice mild razor--I don't know what it is about the razor exactly, but it is quite fun to shave with.brothers wrote:I find that the Shavecraft 101 with 2 shims is about my ideal DE.
