December 10, 2013

1912 was not a good year for me.

• Pre: Tiki Bar Soap -- Dead Sea Facial
• Razor: EverReady 1912 then EverReady 1914
• Blade: GEM PTFE (3)
• Brush: Elite7 Tortoiseshell + WSP Super HMW
• Soap: Tiki Bar Vegan "Woodsy"
• AS: Krampert's Finest Bay Rum

Image

A very strange shave today. I loaded up the EverReady 1912 for the first time since I acquired it recently. I was looking forward to revisit this razor after not having flag rest results with it a year or so ago. I used the same blade I used for the last two days in the ER'24 so this was shave #3 which is nothing on a SE blade. However, the first pass felt horribly tuggy. The razor was very efficient as there was little stubble left after I completed my pass; it was just not an enjoyable feeling as it went to work. I was worried that I trashed the edge removing it from the '24 so I grabbed the '14 to see if it made any difference on the second pass.

My jaw is still on the floor as I type this because I can't believe what a difference the razor switch made. The blade was fine and shave super smooth on my second pass in the '14 even though I was now going ATG. For how similar these razor heads appear it is stunning just how different they perform for me.

Image

Despite the less than stellar first pass I'm irritation free and only received a single wittle weeper which was stymied with a cold water rinse. I give the cushy & slick Tikified lather the credit for that.

Tuesday Night:

Razor: Feather AS-D1
Blade: Schick Plus Platinum

Brush: Semogue 740 (pure badger)
Soap: TRBeck

Lather made in a bowl, as always.
2 1/2 passes.

Cold water rinse.

I make my lather to complement the characteristics of the razor. I haven't used the AS-D1 in a long time, but I remembered that it is very mild and that it clogs very quickly with lather. So, I made a very tightly structured, wet, slick lather with very low viscosity, which worked very well. Cushion would have defeated this razor.

Drifting Away

• Pre: Tiki Bar Soap -- Dead Sea Facial
• Razor: GEM OCMM
• Blade: GEM PTFE (4)
• Brush: RV Arabian Knight Black Fibre
• Soap: Tiki Bar Vegan "Woodsy"
• AS: Krampert's Finest Bay Rum

Image

I think that I've been away from the OCMM too long. Either that or I'm just getting spoiled by that Little Lather Catcher. Definitely got some blade burn today but fortunately the KFBR has calmed it down nicely leaving me with a very smooth feeling face.

I think that I'll just keep the OCMM for those times when multiple days of growth just need a weed whacking. The daily manscaping job appears to be securely in hand for the MCMXIV. Next razor on the list to revisit is the Cobra. Things really have been shaken up in my ShaveCave since the MCMXIV arrived.

-- Wednesday--

Prep: hot water wash with Stirling bath soap
Razor: Frankerazor made of Hallmark top plate, Fatip base plate and Ikon Bulldog handle
Blade: Ладас Суперсталь (1)
Brush: Simpson P8 TSN LE (59/200)
Soap: Mike's Barbershop
Scuttle: Georgetown Pottery G5 in Hamada glaze
Post: Thai Crystal deodorant stick and Simpson Aftershave Balm

Image

Result: BBS in 3+ passes. First shave with the Simpson P8. I like it! I am not a fan of large brushes, or so I thought, but this brush is awesome! Somehow it does not feel huge during lathering. It's very soft and flows the lather amazingly well. I've been using Mike's Barbershop to inaugurate my new brushes. This is my touchstone soap for making amazing lathers and the scent usually gets rid of what animal smell there may be in a new brush. This Simpson had a slight badger funk to begin with, but not too strong. Wonderful shave with excellent results and no irritation.

Wednesday A.M.
PRE: QED Red French Clay soap
SHAVE SOAP: Czech & Speake Oxford and Cambridge soap... first time
BRUSH: QED Saville Row 22mm silvertip
RAZOR: Gem 1912 with GEM PTFE SS blade (2)
POST: Crystal deo as after-shave astringent
GFT Eau de Portugal edt pour as after shave
Clinique For Men Post Shave Healer
It just gets better and better. Took advantage of the recent BullGoose free shipping offer to grab a puck
of the C & S soap and couldn't be happier. Performance right up there with the AOS Tallow, DRH soaps
and the new Valobra hard shave soap... which is to say FABULOUS. Nick free and smooth DFS+ results
with just 2 1/2 passes. The kind of shave that will still feel close and comfortable in 8 or more hours.
Enjoying wet shaving, again.
