A nice phone call from my son

Post by a-cut-above »

I haven't posted much lately but I still read SMF regularly. I thought my SMF colleagues would like this story:
My son called from college a few days ago. We chatted a bit about the usual topics: classes, roommates, our very old boxer, plans for graduation, etc., etc. There was a pause, then, "Hey Dad, when I get home, would you teach me to shave with a safety razor like you use?" This, from the (previous) teenage know-it-all who thought my way of shaving was a hassle. If he could only have seen me smile!
(Next is getting him to ask me about the brush and creams and soaps instead of the blue gel…. :D )

Yes, that would be a good phone call.

Soaps and a brush is part of shaving with a real razor is it not? I consider it to be an important part of the prep. (I face lather)

Set the hook gently and you can reel him in unnoticed.

While discussing wetting the beard, whisker direction, and using minimal pressure as he wipes on the blue gel, I will be quietly and subtly loading a shave brush then lathering my face with no mention of brushes or lather. We will proceed to the shaving instruction. Like Squire said, "Set the hook gently and you can reel him in unnoticed."

Indeed. Age brings wisdom and humility.

It's possible, but not guaranteed. It's a gift at any age, and a blessing to all.

All my kids are grown now and have their own families but I still enjoy getting those kind of phone calls.

Kidding aside, I did enjoy getting the phone call. Maybe the old man isn't so odd after all.

4-years old. I love my Dad, he can do anything.

16-years old. Dad is not with the times.

19-years old. I know so much more than Dad it's not funny.

25-years old. I love my Dad, he was right and I was wrong.

Dave, that was indeed a nice phone call.

I'm of the impression that your son would adopt a brush and soap/cream when it interests him and when it's his idea.

Johnny, your 25-year-old son sounds a bit precocious to me. Most adults I know don't come to that conclusion until much later. :?

That was not my son, that was me and it actually happened when I was 23.

I started shaving with a badger and double edge when I was in high school, more decades ago than I should admit. My son in college has always shaved with a badger and double edged razor...he has never known anything else. However, my daughter in college just introduced us to her new paramour and he shaves with...get this...a badger and a double edge. For the Jews amongst us, let me just say, "L'dor vador!"

Actually my son is smarter than me, has a higher IQ anyway, a fact which he can work into a sentence surprisingly often.
