Pi day - 3.14 15 - looking back to 1915

Pi day - 3.14 15 - looking back to 1915

Post by brothers »

The term "pi" (3.1415) has an unofficial day, they celebrated pi day in 1915, and I hope someone will remember it the next time. This coming Saturday is the last time it comes around for another hundred years. Our son and his family have invited us all over for PIE day (the eating kind). We don't need much of an excuse to get together and have a great time. We're all bringing our favorite pie. Speaking of March 14th, I checked, and found that there was a lot of interesting stuff going on at the time of the last pi day. For one thing, the Great War aka WW1 was underway. The Dresden exploded and sunk on March 14, 1915. Serious stuff. The USA was hosting the San Francisco World's Fair during 1915, from February through December. I found an interesting article about the Top Ten attractions in San Francisco. Here's the link. I hope you enjoy the article as much as I did. I do feel that such an undertaking would be virtually impossible these days for a whole lot of reasons. Happy pi day!

Happy Pi Day, Gary!

Those days of old when it first started certainly were some interesting times.

I think I'm jealous of those folks who were fortunate to have gone to that particular fair.

I've learned something new. I've never heard of Pi Day, but that's probably because it only works for the American format for writing the date, i.e. month, day, year. In most of the other parts of the English-speaking world it is written day, month, year, ergo 14/03/15, which is the format I was taught to use and which is used on this forum.

We're having a happy Pi/Pie day today. The date format isn't universal, but I'm just using the one that works best for this unofficial occasion. We just finished baking three pies to take to the party tonight. Cherry, Lemon Meringue, and my late brother's (Ron's) favorite pie - Blueberry Strata, in honor of the fact that today would have been his 64th birthday. By the way, check this out:

LOL! That's a new one on me, Gary.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have made a nice collage to celebrate Pi Day.

I forgot to mention that a couple of days after Pi Day, there was a Letter to the Editor of the Wall St. Journal which pointed out...

Pi is 3.14159.

If you are going to stop with four places after the decimal point, you should round off the final number, which in this case would make it 3.1416.

So we'll have the Pi Day of the Century to celebrate next year too!
