70s Music
70s Music
As a teen of the 70s, I find myself listening a great deal lately to my music re-acquisitions from that era. Today I am playing my Art Garfunkel collection. Watermark was probably his best -- a marvelous collection of Jimmy Webb songs, with the exception of the "Wonderful World" cover sung by Garfunkel/Simon/Taylor ----- it's one of those really good albums that few people know about. Gotta get me a copy of Breakaway --- that was fabulous. Funny, Angel Claire, his first outing, was more popular than the next 2, but in my mind, isn't quite as good. ymmv.

Wendell...
1) Spotify examined the data of its users last month, and came to the conclusion that people stop listening to new music at age 32!
2) I have my eye on this Art Garfunkel five-album collection - $11.76 + $3.99 shipping.

Re: 70s Music
I went for many years thinking there was no music being made these days that could compete with that from my youth in the '60s and '70s. For the past several years, however, we have purchased a lot of newer music. One source of inspiration has been the cable series, "Live From Darryl's House," where singer Darryl Hall welcomes guest musicians for a jam session. Diane Birch, Rumer, Fitz and the Tantrums and Allen Stone, among others, have found their way into our collection after appearing on the show. Pandora and Spotify theme-based streams also provide exposure to new artists, along with many stations on XM. We still buy and listen to the classics, like the "James Brown Live at the Apollo" CD that arrived from Amazon last week, but we mix in some new talent as well.

Re: 70s Music
I find a lot of hidden gems in soundtrack albums. Plenty of filler in these, but some beautiful music too: "Elizabethtown" (Nancy Wilson originals + classic rock and R&B), "The Village," "Gattaca" for newer; "Casino Royale" (Dusty Springfield) comes to mind for earlier. And Broadway play soundtracks, mostly Sondheim.

Journey, Foreigner, Animals, REO Speedwagon, Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis, Lynard Skynard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Cream, Supremes, Miracles, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Slim Harpo, Hank Williams, Sr and Jr, Little Willie John, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Percy Sledge, Debbie Reynolds, Jimi Hendrix, Willie Nelson, ad infinitum. Oh, so many! I do love it so . . .

Too many to mention ...... including
Fleetwood Mac
The Eagles
George Benson
Gato Barbieri
Chuck Mangione
Bob James
Eric Clapton
Heart -- only the early stuff though -- the latter stuff lost it's flavour for me.
Love the Rod Stewart American Song Book series as well as the Soul Book collection. We play those all the time, as well as some collections we have of British Invasion stuff including one double-cd collection entitled "Heatbeat Summer" taken from the TV series which is outstanding.
My wife has a double Vera Lynn CD that I really enjoy listening to as well from time to time, although can't categorize that as British Invasion or 70s music.

Interesting stat --- I still haven't "gotten" streaming from Spotify or other services yet.GA Russell wrote:Wendell...

If I didn't have all but Angel Claire and Breakaway, I'd grab that Garfunkel set in a New York minute ....... I bought those albums for an average of $4.99 on sale back in the day ...... the entire set for less than $16 is sheer brilliance.

Re: 70s Music
In regard to the Spotify finding, I suspect that most people are only interested in the music of their youth. Maybe it's the memories or nostalgia or what have you.GA Russell wrote: 1) Spotify examined the data of its users last month, and came to the conclusion that people stop listening to new music at age 32!
In my case, it is not the actual songs, but the sound of the era. I like modern jazz from the '50s and '60s (my youth). And although I have little interest in the music of today, I spend a fair amount of moolah on music I have not heard before (and therefore new to me) from the '50s and '60s.
By the way Wendell, I still haven't picked up that Art Garfunkel set yet, but today I ordered a similar 5-album set by Shirley Bassey for $11.43 + $3.99.
