On a lark I drove the entire 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Smoky Mountains to it's terminus at Shenandoah National Park. Beautiful Fall colors and a number of historical stops along the way. The 45 mph speed limit is strictly enforced. At some point my wife and son decided to just go to sleep. It was worth doing . . . once.

Way back when, I would have loved to try this on foot, having always wanted to walk the Highlands and moors of this magnificent island.

There is no place more salubrious on a sunny day than the Highlands of Scotland, or Scotland in general for that matter. My father is from Aberdeen, which is not in the Highlands per se, but when SWMBO and I visit family and friends in the summer it is sublime.

Scotlands is an absolutely fabulous place... I went there a couple of years ago, and absolutely loved the countryside.

But the aching butt was worth the drive and especially in the Austin Mini. Didn't that car have like 10" wheels on it. I do know that it was a very small vehicle that could turn on a dime.

...could have been worse, we might have made the trip in a C-DC. I'll tell ya, I have done many things in my life that I am glad to have done but had I known at the time how dumb an idea it was I would never have been that stupid. This is one of those things.

We are off to North Yorkshire again this fall, and yet are already talking about the next trip over the pond in perhaps fall of 2016. Even though we have talked about going south, Scotland and the Lake District are what is calling us this next go-round. I'd love to hit this road in a Mini. Woot.

As much as I like the south of England I find it quite crowded in the commuter belt around London, especially Hampshire, Surrey, Kent, Buckinghamshire. But there are some beautiful places there such as the New Forest, the Isle of Wight, Winchester, Bath, Dorset and Cornwall. I must say, however, when we are in Scotland I feel much less hemmed in and hence relaxed particularly in and around Aberdeen where my father is from. In fact, compared to south England Scotland is wide open. I haven't been to the Lake District yet, but want to get there as well as to the East Riding of Yorkshire where my maternal grandmother is from.
