New guy here

Post by PerfectlyInsane »

Hello to all,
I'm new to the DE wet shaving thing. I've always shaved with Schick cartridge razors(Tracer, Quattro, etc) and the canned shaving cream. My gf recently bought me a shaving kit from Trader Joe's that just had a brush and shaving cream. I tried it and although it didn't make a good lather the cream seemed better than the canned stuff. That got me started looking into wet shaving. I recently picked up a Merkur HD 34c, Perfecto Badger Brush, Taylor of old Bond street cream, and a sampler pack of razors. I've only shaved with the new stuff a couple of times and had a few issues but I think it will just take time to get my technique down. Thank you for having me hopefully I can learn some stuff from the forum.

Welcome, PerfectlyInsane!

It sounds like you're off to a good start. As Brian said, check back through the threads in the ShaveMyFace University and note the Useful Video thread at the top of the SMF University page. Also, feel free to ask specific questions.

Welcome to the club. Like others have said, sounds like you have a good start. You won't find a better group of gentleman (and at times, ladies) than right here.

For me, the hardest part of switching from multi-blades to DE was un-learning all the bad habits regarding pressure and angle -- the Merkur 34C is a wonderful razor that will simply take a while to become comfortable with.

Try using the Merkur to do the easiest parts of your beard (for me, the cheeks) then finish up with your multi-blade for the rest. Add a little more territory each shave for the DE razor and, before you know it, your Merkur will feel like second nature.
