The Asylum Rx Razor
The Asylum Rx Razor
I received the prototype in the mail this morning and will take it for a spin for tomorrow's shave. A few people asked for a picture with a blade and others asked for overall dimensions.
The razor weighs in at 109g and has an overall length of 106mm with a handle length of 83mm.
Here are a few quick pictures.

I like the looks of that, Phil. What kind of blade does it take?
Is Asylum your new store brand?

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
Thank you Murray. Yes, Asylum Shaving Works is my store brand. The Rx razor takes the Feather Artist Club blades and the Kai Titan blades. It has a thin head profile which should make it very nimble. I have it loaded and ready for tomorrow's shave and will be able to talk more about its shaving characteristics after I have a chance to take it through its paces.CMur12 wrote:I like the looks of that, Phil. Here is a shot showing the Rx next to a Merkur 34C for comparison on size.

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
I took the Rx prototype for a spin this morning and I am very pleased with the performance. The razor was very nimble and very efficient without feeling aggressive. It was very intuitive to use and I did not have to hunt for the proper angle. Even though I had never used the Asylum Rx razor before, I enjoyed an excellent BBS shave with no irritation. I was a little nervous at first because well...you never know. After the first stroke though, I could tell there was nothing to be nervous about.brothers wrote:Looking forward to your initial impressions Phil.
It is everything that I hoped it would be and to me at least, is a game changer.

I would have thought being so big that upper / lower lip shaving might be difficult, but good to read that it isnt an issue

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
It has a very thin head profile; much thinner than a Merkur 34C or a Gillette razor for example. As a result, upper lip shaving is a breeze.fallingwickets wrote:I would have thought being so big that upper / lower lip shaving might be difficult, but good to read that it isnt an issue

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
if you make a de version (even if one side of the blade is enclosed) I would buy one in a heartbeat......feather type blades just dont work for me no matter how hard I try. first shave is awesome and after that its all downhill

Have you tried the Kai Titan Mild blades? They are my preferred blade of this ilk.fallingwickets wrote:if you make a de version (even if one side of the blade is enclosed) I would buy one in a heartbeat......feather type blades just dont work for me no matter how hard I try. first shave is awesome and after that its all downhill

If it has been more than 2 years since you used a Kai DE blade, I would try them again (new stock...not the same pack).fallingwickets wrote:I tried the regular kai de blades....wasnt a very good experience for me and so I wouldnt pursue the brand further

I found the Kai DE blades kind of harsh, myself, but, from what I have been reading on these fora, the Kai Titan blades that this new razor takes are very different.

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
I had first tried Kai DE blades 6 years ago or so and also found them harsh. All of a sudden about two years ago, I started seeing a lot of good reviews on the blades and decided to try them again. They are now my favorite DE blade. Something changed. They are a bit thicker and have less flex than typical DE blades and as such, they do not work well in all DE razors. They work like a charm in most of the modern DE razors though (Merkur, Wolfman etc).CMur12 wrote:I found the Kai DE blades kind of harsh, myself, but, from what I have been reading on these fora, the Kai Titan blades that this new razor takes are very different.

The Kai Titan SE blades are very smooth right out of the chute. They are perhaps slightly less sharp than the Feather A/C blades but, they are plenty sharp enough and are very durable and much more forgiving than the Feather blades.

Re: The Asylum Rx Razor
The labels arrived yesterday. The razors will come in the Blue Asylum boxes. I am in the process of having custom foam inserts made for the boxes that will fit the razor like a glove.
