I am awaiting some Royal Yacht aftershave, which I found on eBay. I had heard about it long ago and have been looking for it ever since. Report to follow.

Yes, please do, we've had a lot of comment about that in the past, whether Taylor 74 is essentially the same as Royal Yacht or a variation.

John, Enjoy! I wore Royal Yacht, mainly the Lime version but the original also, for the last few years that it was available. To me, and a couple of other gents I knew, the Taylor's 74 colognes were the same, even the bottles were/are the same just different labels and caps. Of course, as I said, this was only the last few years that it was available but I suspect that it remained unchanged during the entire time that the line was owned by Swaine, Addney, and Brigg. On SMF only Mr. Bargepole has any knowledge at all about what the real original version was like as Geo. Thomas's shop closed in the early '70s. His recollection is that in the shop they had a few different house scents that were just in rather plain bottles.

This looks like the old green version so I suspect it won't smell much like Taylor's No 74 Lime - correct assumption?

John, in the case that this is so do you have any of the modern green No 74 to compare it to?

Yes, I have some Collection No. 74 Victorian Lime. The RY is coming to me from Great Britain, with estimated delivery in a couple weeks.

Chris, No, what John's getting is the 'original' version ( Bargepole does not remember the old Thomas's shop in Duke Street as having a lime cologne although they may have ). The 'original' that I used was like the current Taylor's #74 'original'....the green stuff. It's a very old school floral with lilac and jasmine and what not on a vaguely leatherish base. It's unusual stuff and I could never quite decide whether I actually liked it or not.

No question in my mind, Gordon, #74 is my favourite all round aftershave. Similarly the limes version is my favourite lime aftershave.

ive been using the 74 since the great brooha chris(?) started about it circa 2011......to this day i cannot imagine using anything else

Pinaud Vegetal is a taste I haven't managed to acquire. Smells like something died in it.

Taylor's #74 Victorian Limes wasn't my cup of tea, it was that leathery thing that turned me off. Needless to say Lilac Vegetal was one whiff and in the trash can. Sold the Taylor's though.

Compared to other "lime" fragrances, is the 74 any more long lasting??
My teen nephew and I both like the St Johns Lime product; he doesn't much care but
to me it, and all other lime scents, tend to be fleeting.
Gordon once commented here he thought that very characteristic of citrusy scents, but
I hold out hope a longer lasting lime a/s or cologne is out there somewhere!

Yes, the Royal Yacht/Taylor's #74 Lime is considerably longer lasting than most any other real 'lime' cologne/aftershave. It's partially those leathery base notes that Gary, apparently, didn't like but also how it's blended in general. I don't know all the details of exactly why but almost everyone who's tried it agrees that it has incredible staying power for a lime scent.
