Did you enjoy a cigar today?

I smoke when offered, but rarely go out and grab one myself. Part of the issue is that we don't really have a good space at our home for smoking. The other part is health - I had a heart scare a few years ago that put me off the vast majority of recreational smoking (I smoked a fair amount of hookah tobacco before then).

When I do smoke, I enjoy most offerings from Punch. My favorite, though, must be the Fuente Hemingway Short Story line. Fantastic, and just the right size for someone with little nicotine tolerance.

This afternoon I enjoyed a Baccarat toro, an old brand that has been around for years. It is a mild Honduran cigar with a sweetened tip. I didn't expect to like it but was surprised. Pretty nice smoke.

Over the past twenty years I have had the pleasure to smoke maybe six or seven Cohibas. They truly are wonderful cigars! Hopefully, someday, they will be legally available in the US.

I am no aficionado and have to smoke on a graduate student's budget. So, tonight, to commemorate the last evening on an unexpected trip to Florida, I enjoyed a Punch Royal Coronation after the rest of the clan was abed. Delightful.

Yes, although I suspect Mr. Churchill could afford a damn sight more, and better, smokes than me!

I've read Winston enjoyed being au naturel while at home, including when receiving visitors. Now that's something I could afford to do.

We are having miserable summer weather here in south Texas. Over 100 degrees each day for several weeks. It makes it hard to enjoy a cigar in my outdoor "man cave". This evening I decided to go ahead and smoke a cigar after the sun went down. Not wanting to waste an expensive cigar in the uncomfortable weather, I chose a Quorum toro, an inexpensive Nicaraguan cigar made in the JC Neumann factory. What a pleasant surprise! This is a cigar that comes in bundles of 20 for about 30 dollars...a buck and a half each. It was a very flavorful and enjoyable treat. They make three types: habano, maduro and shade. I smoked the shade, a light wrapper made from connecticut seed shade grown tobacco. I like everything about this cigar. Note to self: stock up on these.

This evening I smoked another Anthology toro made by Altadis in the Dominican Republic. A full bodied cigar with an Ecuador habano wrapper. A very good one hour smoke. Its a cigar that requires some attention. Not a casual smoke like one you would smoke on the golf course. The flavors are subtle and need to be appreciated.

Basil
