Today I pulled out the razor that launched me on my straight razor journey six years ago. That fateful morning I ended up slicing through my cheek and discovering my Parkinson’s. After the accident the razor sat in my den drawer for 5 years, until I discovered my current workaround using 3lb ankle weights on my forearms about a year ago, and have been happily straight-shaving my mug daily ever since. The Dovo Special was my first straight razor. It’s an excellent razor, and with my tremor mgmt technique one of my favorites. The dome shave featured the Barbasol Floating Head, a highly efficient head shaver. I feel refreshed, clean, and velveteen smooth.
RAZOR: Dovo Special 5/8 (Mug), Barbasol Floating Head (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Rearden Razor 316L SS Tuxedo Synth
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

Re: SOTD February 1 - February 7, 2021
Not much to say about today’s shave! Japanese Silver Steel really holds an edge, and the Tanifuji Airi 11/16, although small and dainty, is a true whisker melter! Two sessions on the pasted linen strops and one on leather to finish when combined with my regular three pass MWF protocol, resulted in a polished, almost shiny mug shave surface. The Japanese know how to make a straight razor. After lathering up the gourd, I grabbed my little Ronson safety razor, a deceptively head-heavy shaving tool fitted with a Schick Proline B-20 Injector blade, and blazed through my noggin stubble effortlessly. This little safety razor is remarkably efficient, and really delivered the velveteen goods. The Krampert’s Frostbite was the perfect counterpoint to the almost foot of snow deposited outside my window. I feel clean, velveteen smooth, and quite cool. Time to shovel in front of the garage and our front walkway.
RAZOR: Tanifuji Airi 11/16 (Mug), Ronson Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Schick Proline B-20 Injector
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid Knot #007
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Krampert’s Frostbite AS Splash.

Today’s shave marked a return to my regular MWF. The shave was uneventfully excellent. The Eclipse Red Ring never fails to deliver an awesome noggin shave, and this morning gave practical testimony to that fact. Two slow, luxurious ATG passes was all she wrote. I just really enjoy this particular safety razor. People who bought Classic Shaving’s Occam’s DE a year or so ago can experience a comparable shave if they select the aggressive baseplate. I’ll be taking mine out for a spin tomorrow. The mug shave featured my A. Witte Copperhead 6/8. This 80 year old razor really holds an edge. I purchased it as NOS, and there was a note in the case stating “honed by Henerey 1939”. Out of curiosity I did shave directly off Henerey’s old hone and the shave was ok. I’ve since refinished it with my Naniwa 12k/jasper edge, and appreciate my edge more. In any case three passes with a very slight weep on my right cheek noticed on the blade which disappeared between the first and second lathers. I feel clean, refreshed and dolphin smooth.

How the mighty are fallen! Can only use my left hand today, so for the first time in over a year it wasn't a straight shave. Brass General with Feather blade on a Jagger handle, long-discontinued C&E Sandalwood cream, the cobalt scuttle and my best Apothecary Shop brush:

I bought a Taylor cream early in my wetshaving days and then moved to soaps within a few months. Of late, I've come back to using creams regularly. TOBS remains a terrific producer. I've got lavender, coconut, aloe vera, avocado, and cedarwood on hand. Wonderful stuff.
