Re: Semogue 2-Band Finest Badger

To keep my word, I should spent a few words about my newly formed relationship with recently acquired Plisson EW. The thing is, I will need to apologise for holding back, and not saying much new earlier on. Brush is good, I like it, however that's as much as I can say. A few thoughts. I am lacking s...

Re: We Prep Our Beards, So....

:D :D Decade of my neglect and abuse is on display. My worst habit - pressing probably more than needed when loading the brush, and the same when soaping face. reminds me of my first brush, a floris. Lasted almost 20 years and its end brought me here to smf. I still have it somewhere in the pseudo ...

Re: We Prep Our Beards, So....

Aty, regarding the phrase . . . . decreasing brush life cycle . . . . We've seen this phrase a few times, all of us have, and to me the definition of brush life cycle is pretty simple. Once upon a time we get a brush (any brush or many brushes) and start using it which is the beginning of the brush...

Re: We Prep Our Beards, So....

I never found any benefit at all from things like Trumper's Skin Food or Castle Forbes PreShave (though they work fine as after shave balms). I scrub my beard with hot water and soap (or a detergent bar or gel, but careful to change the sink water as detergent and soap don't like each other), then ...

Re: We Prep Our Beards, So....

Simpson used to say that circular scrubbing motions were likely to damage their brushes and that sideways painting strokes were to be used. I can't see how one is to work up any lather with circular motions though. And having swirled the brush on the soap, I do find that circular motions on top of ...

Re: We Prep Our Beards, So....

In preparation for shaving, I let a brush stand in warm water, submerged about 80% height of loft, keeping the knot above surface. For that I use a small ceramic cup which keeps brush in upright position. Then I go around moistening soap, razor, brushing teeth, condition face with pre-shave, showeri...

Re: Acquisitions thread

I have very simple rule regarding personal grooming products, namely, find a good quality product you like, and stick with it. Don't get distracted unnecessarilly by too many choices, yet recently I've violated exactly what I am preaching, and I am not happy about it at all. I've ended up with 5 bru...

Re: Acquisitions thread

Greetings Chris and all my old friends! I will hang around in spite of the decline of the House of Plisson! It is good to find a lively conversation. Buzz Hi there What's the problem with Plisson? (Recently taken over by Canadians, if I am not mistaken). I've purchased two of their brushes this yea...

Re: Has it happened to you too?

Men grow older, and skin changes. It makes sense then for our routine and tools to adapt and change more from necessity, rather than from boredom. On darker side of things, perhaps I was looking for plausible explanation why I needed that certain brush by Plisson, and some other stuff from Meißner T...

Re: Cheap shaving tools guide for a newbie.

I am also expecting sooner or later someone in corridors of power will tell me what I have been doing so far, that I got it all wrong. :D Do not worry. There is no "power" here. Just opinions and preferences. For example, many say "Let the weight of the razor do the work". I say...

Re: Plisson European Grey

Aty, several years ago I bought one of the Plisson European Grey size 12 brushes from a gent in Texas. It was a complete disappointment because it was much too stiff and scritchy for my shaving purposes. I It was a beautiful brush, and well-made, but I prefer and require a brush that is soft and ne...

Re: Cheap shaving tools guide for a newbie.

What's yours experience with that stick, John? I got one exactly like that several years ago (in Toronto actually), and after about a month or so I had to give it up and stop using it as a deodorant applicator. I have never used it as a deodorant, only for post-shave. I'm still using that same stic...

Re: Cheap shaving tools guide for a newbie.

Regarding alum blocks/sticks: Typical sticks, like the Omega or RazoRock, are 60 g. Blocks can be from 54 to 100 g or so, cost somewhat more, and are hard to hold (for some people). For close to the price of a 60 g alum stick you can get a so-called "crystal deodorant" that is 120 g . But...

Re: Meissner Tremonia is back

I hope you like the new Plisson, Aty. In this hobby, we seem to end up buying a lot of equipment and expendables to find what does work and what doesn't. If I had known early on what I know now , I would have saved a LOT of money! If you're happy with the new Plisson - and there is good reason to e...

Re: Meissner Tremonia is back

I am all in for Meißner. I simply love that shaving soap. I am not sure if it is superior to any other soap on this planet, but no matter. What I think is important, that I feel good after shaving with it. Next to soap (Dark Limes), my line of Meißner products now includes balm after shave, deodoran...

Re:

Dan, I have a Plisson EG 14. I can't compare with Rooney, I've never had one. I had a Vulfix, but gave it to my son-in-law. I find the EG to be a very nice, somewhat prickly, soap brush (at least that is what I use it for, but I mostly use soaps). Not floppy at all. I've seen them described as &quo...

Re: Plisson brush choices

Oh thanks. Sounds like nostalgic walk through era now long time gone. I love all my little ones, just four (for now). Postman a few minutes ago brought another puck of Meißner Tremonia Dark Limes rasierseife. (Good pick me up). Now I have to make my mind which brush will have the honour of first dan...

Re: Plisson brush choices

Oddly enough, I eventually decided that HMW was not living up to the best of the old Simpson brushes, and gave it to Gordon. Hmm, interesting. Bear in mind, I have merely 4 brushes in my daily rotation (drying cycle). After reading several of your posts, I gather you probably own significantly more...

Re:

I have a Plisson #12 in HMW with a tortoiseshell handle, and it is a perfectly good brush. I use it most on soaps. Chris I have to agree. Mine sits on my shelve only about six months, however it is extremely versatile brush for shave when I have time to load it with DRH soap. (I bought far too many...

Thank you Gary. State of soteriological release (shaving nirvana?) is a path of endless struggle, therefore I might be in for a long ride. :)
