Thanks for the heads up. My standard formula is 9 parts Plymouth to 2 parts Noilly, swirled gently for about 30 seconds, often with a dash of orange bitters and 3 big olives. Never tried the Vya vermouth that the commenters talk about, but it sounds worth a try now that NP is trashed. Regards, I he...

Bad news, Martini fans: Noilly Prat changing!

I bear bad tidings... I'm gonna have to stash a case or two away on this news.

MrSmooth....I see your point, but I choose to back BSD as I absolutely detest proprietary hardware. If the people at apple would allow their OS to be installed on ANY off the shelf hardware, they may get my vote. Not an issue for me, obviously. But then again, I make my living off of proprietary so...

Free BSD Yes, there is a small learning curve, but it would be well worth your time. A small learning curve, huh?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You must be joking. Pretty good OS though, if not the best. As a professional UNIX developer (since 1988, still for 5 flavors of UNIX today), I like FreeBSD a great deal. H...

I suppose there's also some logic to doing a partial volume boil on the stovetop, then topping up in the fermenter with cold water. Yup. I used to do it that way when I started out, no wort chiller needed. ...snip.. Then, just scrounge around and try to find a deal on a kettle to go with your frien...

PS / Edit: I have never had a boilover! Yeah, but you have 4 gallons of headspace! Try brewing in a 20 qt pot. :) To be fair, i've not had one in a long time - not even when my brew bud and I split a 10 gallon near-full boil batch from his 11 gallon pot. Seems like a gallon is the minimal safe head...

Re: Home Brewing

Any Home Brewers on the board? I have been tinkering with the idea of home brewing for a little over a year. I own the Papazian book and actually went through the process with someone once. What kind of equipment is essential to start out? Can i use a stove top or do i need one of the turkey fryers...

That doesn't look good. Either take care of the burr, or contact the vendor to send you one that isn't messed up.

As long as shaving is a pleasure rather than a chore BBS don't matter. Amen to that. That's what it is all about. Had perhaps the most enjoyable shave ever yesterday. Took an extra-hot shower, had a cold beer in the shower (a pleasure I learned from here) and a nice, hot shave with Truefitt's 1804....

I can achieve BBS, but only going against the grain -- and fortunately, my skin is tolerant of it. I use a Merkur HD open comb, a fairly aggressive razor, with Israeli blades. I can't achieve BBS with my '47 Gillette SS. However, if I don't do good face prep, I can't do it without causing myself pai...

Looks like an event from the State Church of Iceland (formally called the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland). Looks like the vader guy was just hanging around about the time they had a procession. More pix:

C... I've thought they could axe the Chevrolet brand altogether.... . Crazy. The most reliable car in GM's lineup is the Malibu. And it is a decent car, fun to drive -- awesome balance and cornering. Same platform (frame) as the Saab 93. Not to mention the Silverado being the best pickup on the mar...

My point was illustrating the fact that in large North American auto makers have not illustrated the corporate social responsibility as their European counterparts (or to an extent Japanese). By this I mean, when gas prices were peaking this summer and consumers were screaming Detroit had very litt...

Bottom line, why bail out the creator of the Hummer??? The year is 2008!! If North American producers would realize that the good old days of fuel excessive fuel consumption are over and creative a shift in the consumers appetite, I believe this would be much less severe situation. RIP Dinosaurs......

Ancient History. Try this article from Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press. http://freep.com/article/20081117/COL14/811170379 Since the first article basically points out that GMs woes are primarily due to their adversarial relationship with the UAW, this second article doesn't really address tha...

That's really interesting. I didn't know you could mix OSes that were built for completely different architectures (PowerPC & Intel) like that. I learn something new every day. :) Yup. You have to emulate the processors, tho, so it can be slower. Since modern processors are so fast, though, dep...

MrSmooth: It's great to see another Coloradoan in here. You don't happen to live near Fort Collins do you? I've been toying with the idea of producing my own beer or red wine someday. The only time I tried mead was at the Colorado Renaissance Festival, and it was sickeningly sweet. I'd love to samp...
