Very good post, although I had difficulty following. This is an important truth in my humble opinion. What counts is flat highly polished plane facets to the bevel meeting at the correct angle. All our efforts were directed to achieving this end, and the results bear this way of thinking out. Clay.

For under the nose . . .

For the cleft use the same basic technique, but vertically. Emphasis should be added to the "scooping" of the blade edge, or turning, if you will.

Have fun!

I'd stretch the cleft out with two fingers also.

I apologize if this is a little off subject, my head is hurting a little from this thread. I recently took note of my razors and many had varied sharpness levels. Each was indicitive of a very sharp edge and none showed the classic symptoms of being over honed. I was suspicious though, as I have ha...

I don't use my Norton anymore either, between the Col Conk and a barber hone the job gets done quick and easy. I don't think it matters what hone you use, its the grit that gets the job done. For $30 I don't have the "snobbery" of the Norton but I kinda like doing things cheap. If you want...

Re: Natural stone vs. ceramic stone vs pasted strops

"I don't suppose the Colonel Conk arkansas stone glued onto a paddle that one can find for under $20 would do the trick?"

You know you've arrived with a traditional straight when you start to realize you don't need shaving cream anymore.

DEF,

Just keep in mind that you can't discount shaving with a straight even if you don't like the Feather....very little relation.

Hanging strop, with or without linen. Used daily before shaving. ~$40 4-sided paddle strop, with 3, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 micron pastes (get the one from Tony), used roughly weekly to monthly, depending on how far you let the edge go. ~$50 a barber's hone for the paddle ~$5-15 Norton 4k/8k hone. ~$60-70...

Do you have any extra pasted strops laying around I might be able to pick up from you next month? I don't hone too well. Those strops are awesome. We should get together sometime, I'll hone up that Pet razor for you something fierce. It took me two years to learn though. If your ever up in Fairfax ...

The last time I was in Kuwait and Saudi I don't recall seeing a DE but they did have cartridge razors but they were not Gillette. They were some cheap knock off, even worse than Gillette.

Chris,

Thanx for your comment on the steel hardness, that is interesting.

Rossar,

I get about 12 shaves from mine between honings. I find mine too light to stay in my daily rotation, but I use it as a travel razor.

I tried the Midnight as well. I'm in my second year of straight shaving. The pull was horrible. I quit after two strokes. Only shaved part of my cheek and went back to my straight.

I just payed $40 for mine with the directions included. But I seriously recall the moment I decided I was going to buy it regardless of the bid. $40 or $80, hardly enough to worry about the difference if you want something and have the money. It appears to me that people are calculating the cost of ...

Chris probably hit nailed it. I thought, just for argument sake, that straight was the differation from "Hoe" type razors which were designed with a distinct bend in the razor/handle geometry. Where as the straight razor has a straight geometry between the blade and the handle.

I just want to say thanx. I was beginning treatment for sinus headaches and migranes. The pills and medications were a worry for me I don't have to suffer. The Neti pot relieves the pain in minutes. I've popped 12 decongestants and 6 aspirin to no relief, used the Neti pot and felt instant relief. I...
