Hi Gordon, I know my post probably sounds absurd, and I don't for a minute mean to indicate that I think that Barbasol is a match for say, Harris soap - far from it. But I have found that I'm sensitive most any scented shave soaps or creams - I haven't tried them all (could never afford it!), but I’...

You want simple? I'll give you simple: Merkur Classic (the cheapest one) Personna blades (store brand @ Walgreens, Publix, etc.) Barbasol Original (yes, that's what I said...) Drug store A/S of your choice - for me, A/V or Pinaud Bay Rum I rarely use my brushes & soaps anymore... For what ever r...

I have a 70's vintage Injector (broken handle) that I never cared for and don't miss, a Lady Gillette DE (vintage unknown, light blue with decorated handle, also broken), a 40's era Super Speed that I don't use much but keep for nostalgic purposes, a Merkur HD and a Classic. I use the Classic every ...

OK I'll fess up, I use them every day and I like them. It's not that I"m cheap it's that I get great shaves with them. +1... I've been using these blades for years, and have always gotten great shaves from them - they're more consistant that Merkurs, they're inexpensive and available everywher...

Yep, just as the name implies, a brutally short cut on the sides and back, with just enough left on top to allow it to be shaped flat and level. The Butch Wax made the top stiff enough to easily support the weight of a standard china dinner plate...

When I was a kid in the 60's, flat-tops were standard fare (in my neighborhood at least), which included a liberal application of 'Butch Wax', which took at least three days to wash out of your hair...

Gordon - you hit the nail on the head... $15~$30 per year for shaving soap is no burden - it's the desire to have a dozen bars of soap at any one time! I have a Duke 3 in best, and as you said, there probably is no better brush on the market - different, but not better... Unfortunately, how can one ...

Well, I for one am gratified to read some of the comments in this thread. I don’t have a great deal of disposable income (at least not for shaving stuff), and so have had to limit my purchases and try and live vicariously through you guys… Now, I have purchased my share of soaps and creams, brushes,...

Heresy

About a week or so ago, just for a little ‘contrast’, I decided to shave with Colgate canned foam (an old can that had been under the sink for quite a while)… I prepped as I usually do, and fully expected that I wouldn’t finish a complete first pass before giving up and taking up my brush, but much ...

I can vouch for the Simpson Duke #3 in Best - mine doesn't shed (niether does my Duke #2), and it's a great brush all around. I have a Vulfix Burlington as well, which is also a good inexpensive brush, though obviously not in the same league as the Simson. I also have a Savile Row 104, which is evid...

Williams is a good shave soap - definitely. The lather is on the thin side, but it shaves close because of that. On the up side, it doesn't contain strong fragrances or essential oils that can irritate. One of my favorite (and least expensive!) shave combos is my HD with a Personna blade, and Willia...

I'm amazed too, Murray - I did a little research in the interim and found most comments to be akin to yours. I don't have any allergies or particular sensitivities that I’m aware of... I wonder if perhaps I got hold of a 'bad batch'?

Kirk's Coco Castile Soap

Gents, I thought I'd seen this soap mentioned on this board before, and decided to try it... Jeez - what's with this stuff?! The first time I used it over the weekend, I felt like I'd bathed with Comet – really dried out my skin, and actually burned a little bit on my face and in, uh, other areas......

I have been using soap regularly, but when I use cream, I prefer it in a tube as well. I squeeze a measured amount into the palm of my hand - easy to get a consistent quantity that way – and then begin lathering in my palm before moving to the face…

All, Thanks for the input, and sorry if I put you on the spot Gordon- it wasn’t intentional. Gordon, Like everyone else here, I’ve read the recent horror stories about Simpsons, but I decided to take a chance on the Duke 3 – I knew Lee would stand behind it if there were problems. Thankfully so far, there are none. You mentioned leadership and Q/C problems – can you elaborate? If so, do you...

Both my brushes came with a little ‘Use and Care’ guide, complete with diagrams – I thought it was funny too, and charming… And yeah, both brushes are gorgeous… The 2 is a bit small for my taste, but the 3 is perfectly sized – large enough to whip up a good load of lather, but small enough to travel...

Simpsons Instructions

Gents, How many of you Simpsons owners follow the printed exhortations included with your brush regarding the use of ‘light to and fro strokes’ as opposed to ‘heavy circular motions’ for developing and applying lather? Circular or swirling motions just seem more natural to me - I avoid applying exce...
